there are some websites that offer unlocked phones and other phones with a subsidized price with a contract through different carriers..does anyone know any of these sites? i know i have seen them before but i dont remember any specifically..maybe we could get the n900 subsidized through on of those sites :)

Oh, you mean someplace like exoticphone.com? They appear to let you put any phone on a contract plan with T-Mobile or AT&T...

don't see the n900 yet, but they're pretty good at getting the good phones :) They have a lot.

I think Nokia's warranty is 24 months.  Regardless of where you buy it, you will have to register the device and then mail it for repair, if you have a problem.

I think you are wrong.  Looking at Nokia's site, it looks like their warranty is for 12 months.

Buying a 3 year extended warranty from Amazon for $50 looks like a good deal, as opposed to shaving $20 off of the price.

So do what I did, buy the n900 from Newegg, and the $50 SquareTrade warranty from Amazon. :D

Really?

How?

Are they a reputable company? (I guess "Yes" or you would not have purchased).

It has not made sense why the N900 has Tmo 3G, but no Tmo announcement yet.  Here is my theory why:

1.  The phone is a computer first and phone later down the list and equal to the internet and media function.

2.  Nokia understands (now) that they need to add more phone function, hence the portrait mode they are working on (amongst other things).  They actually listen to the Nokia community- at least to some degree.

3.  They are starting to sense that based on pre-orders, a LOT more people are buying this device than computer or tech fans.

I think Tmo may be waiting for a more "phone centric" interface to be made, so an early Q1 launch makes more sense if it ever comes out.  The beauty about this is that due to Maemo, the interface should be able to be added to other Tmo users who got their phone elsewhere.  Assuming no lock-downs of course ;)

The N900 is becoming more cool the more I research it and read the community information.  There are also hardware devs that explain the N900 has the same power as the 1ghz Snapdragon, but allocated differently in architecture (think PS3 and 360).

The Pharos phone has Tmo 3G but will likely never be announced on T-Mobile. I surely hope the Nokia n900 does not go the way of the Pharos and instead gets offered with some sort of subsidy

I second you on the phone centric interface... Symbian has more going for it in regards to phone functionality. Now, if enough apps can be developed out there [like for s60] that can modify the telephony functionality then we could have an even better "phone". Then again, being that Maemo was born an internet tablet, phone functionality may not ever be improved upon. Depends on how far Nokia wants to go with Maemo.

In a way they may be onto something... the joke these days is "It even makes phone calls, too!"... more and more people use their phones these days for things not related to phone calls. They can always release apps or let 3rd party developers try and improve upon phone functionality instead, and they can just focus on making the best internet tablet ever.

I think Maemo is the future of Nokia. S60 is very outdated compared to all the other OS's. Lastly I'm fine with the n900 being based more on internet than on phone calls. Man, I spend three times the amount of time on the internet than I do on the phone.

I agree on all counts from both you guys.  Looks like Nov 16th seems to be the date they are homing in on now.

The device plays 800X480 res divx files while multi-tasking and can play full Flash while multi tasking too.  The power of a 433mhz DSP helping out.

So I am contemplating whether to buy the phone from newegg or from amazon. Newegg=cheaper but amazon=buyers remorse.
I know they have buyers remorse but does anybody know nay details about it?

Amazon allows return, with no restock and Newegg charges 15% unless defective.  I went with newegg to save money, but I see what what you mean.

I may buy that extended warranty from Amazon mentioned earlier in the thread.

Looks pretty solid for mid November.

Good news:  VLC is coming to the N900!  The greatest media app will be released before the end of the year.  WOW.

Also, the current browser on the N900 is Firefox based.  So much so, the Firefox add-ons ID and work on the N900.

N900 is getting ordered this Friday. After pay time. Also after i sell my sidekick. :) I have been doing some research on the Processor, and this thing is impressive. Up to 1Ghz of speed, couple that with 1gb of RAM and you have the most powerful handset on the market.

Yep!

I like the N900 so much, I did not bail from Tmo for Verizon (almost same price as Verizon and 3G in my town).  I forgot though that I have $10 of insurance for two devices and N900 will not work with Verizon.

Actual Verizon cost would be $120 more per year.

N900 is too sexy to turn down :)

Besides the .2" bigger screen and compass I would not use, I am not seeing $150 more device with Droid (based on retail of each).

N900 has and Droid does not:

1.  32 gigs of built in fast memory and an sd slot (not class 2 sd card like Droid).
2.  better camera
3.  a LOT more codec support
4.  better browser
5.  not locked down
6.  FM receiver and transmitter
7.  OS use the dynamic scaling of the 3430 instead of capping it like Droid
8.  Flash 9.4 now instead of (at least) a five month wait and N900 is getting 10.1 too

Again:  Droid costs $150 more than the N900, but less an immediate issue of course with two year contract with Verizon.

Still, having wide coverage of 3G is very tempting and if N900 was Verizon 3G, I would bail from Tmo and make many people here very happy.  ;)

Yeah, it would be hard for me not to switch. Verizon has 3g Everywhere. And I mean everywhere. I'm still stuck on Edge here in Ohio.Oh well I have wifi at home and at my university so not too big of a deal.
Anything new on the release date?

I'm trying to get my first smart phone in the next few months. I want a physical keyboard, so I thought the Cliq would be for me, but now I'm holding off for a bit. This phone looks crazy, maybe a little overkill for what I need, but its still awesome.

I really like Android, how does Maemo compare to it? I like how all the apps are free so you can download them and try them out and see if they're useful or not, does Maemo have free apps as well?

I really need some help with picking my first smart haha.

@Protest,
I would recommend you going with the cliq, G1, Mytouch, or with ablackberry for your first smartphone. Main difference between maemo and Android is openness, Maemo is completly open and dare I say it is for the geeks who like full control over there phone. Android is simple but also very customizable. Also Android has more apps compared to maemo and if you like how Android has free apps to choose before you buy it.
