I've seem instances where ADT works with some home alarms and others where it does not.

This is true with any alarm company that uses VOiP. Several smaller companies work "hit or miss" with companies depending on the area that the house is. Why? I don't have the faintest idea.

Give a temporary number a try if you can with your ADT service for testing purposes. If it works, you have home service for $10. If it doesn't, you have 14 days to return the router with no questions asked.

No risk. No reward.

The two year contract requirement is the deal breaker for me.

seen someone sold one at 1year, the router is 80 instead of 40

Thats the hiport adapter. If they get the wireless router, its $150 with a 1 year contract.

I've always been told that 2 years is required and there is no 1 year option with @home.

Sure, it can be done but it's one of those things you aren't supposed to do.  Ever wonder why there isn't a 1 year price on the price card for the router or adapter?

Well the problem as I see is the equipment price and contract and services offered.  I'm with Lingo for my home phone.  I get unlimited calls to landlines in Europe (which allows me to stay in touch with my family) in addition to the US & Canada for $25 or so a month.  I got the equipment for free with only a year contract.

T-Mobile would have me switching in a second if they offered more competitive international plans, especially considering their presence in countries like the UK and Germany.

Probably the other problem is peoples reliance on internet that can be crappy causing negative reveiws.   The problem is making sure that VOIP is prioritized.  In addition downloading large files while trying to call can be problomatic.  My linksys routers does a great job at making voip a priority, even then I do have to remember that when downloading the Windows 7 Beta I may have call issues.

Yea but the customer I was activating already had a router and this was his 2nd @home line.  It would make no sense for him to get a 2 year contract since all he needed was the sim card.

And - I can't believe this is a hard sell. As long as somebody has Internet - there is NO cheaper alternative for home phone service. Magic Jack is terrible. Where's your customer service? What happens when you kill your mother board because your PC is ALWAYS on? That PC better be cleaned weekly (dust, etc) so the fan isn't dirty from running 60% of the time your PC is on.

Is Magic Jack worth it when you have to replace your computer at the tune of at least $500 per replacement?

No - not really.
ROTFLOL!!!
My computer is already always on.

So, looking at it your way, the money I save on the phone bill will go to my computer upgrade.
Plus, I can use it for faxing. That is not an option with T-Mobile. I am about ready to drop my Vonage. Magicjack might soon be porting telephone numbers, I might wait till then and then drop Vonage.
