Can I have the link for the new OS for my bb8900? I Just got mine today
Congrats on your new Blackberry 8900!

Here is the official latest OS and the most stable OS for the 8900. Make sure to follow all directions carefully. If you need any help don't hesitate to ask. ;)

Here we go another OS Upgrade! YAY!

Latest OS: 8900 4.6.1.353/4.6.1.231 (English + East Asian) AS OF 5-15-09

Software For BlackBerry® Curve (TM) 8900 smartphone

BlackBerry Handheld Software v4.6.1.353 (EastAsia) plus English

Package Version: 4.6.1.353
Consisting of:

* Applications: 4.6.1.231
* Software Platform: 4.2.0.108
* File name: 8900jEastAsia_PBr4.6.1_rel353_PL4.2.0.108_A4.6.1.2 31_Hutchison.exe
* File size: 121.59MB

Download the OS here:
https://www.blackberry.com/Downloads/entry.do?code=06997F04A7DB92466A2BAA6EBC8B872D

Instructions to install on ANY 8900 from ANY CARRIER.

1. Download the above OS file to the PC then install it to the PC by running (double clicking) the file you downloaded.
2. Go to c:\program files\common files\research in motion\apploader and delete the file named "vendor.xml."
3. Plug in BB and double click on "Loader.exe." It's located in the same place as the above vendor.xml file.

The process takes about 45 minutes to an hour depending on how much data you have to backup and restore during the process. Once it's done loading the new OS it will reboot (it may do this twice during the entire process.) You will see a white screen with an hourglass for up to 20 minutes at a time while the DM says "waiting for initialization."
If, for some reason, you end up with a white screen with small icons and the number 507, simply connect to the PC again and run Loader.exe again and it should load the OS to the device.

WARNING: Loading your Blackberry Device with this OS and sending it back to tmobile will result in a Out OF Warranty notice and a fee. So before you send back the device make sure to put the OFFICIAL OS  for your BB device from tmobile you can get it at www.tmobile.com/bbupgrade

Changes in this OS: Just started using this yesterday. More memory is the only thing I've noticed so far. I'll keep you guys posted if I see any other differences.
Good Luck! Feel free to share your experiences with the new OS.

.231 is the best OS yet, it's a good improvement in UMA and battery life over .206.
Read the forum rules and search!

Is there really any benefit to me upgrading to the latest one? I'm running the one that came with my phone .206 I think. I'm not having any problems with it... is there any added functionality I'd get?

I HIGHLY recommend you upgrade your OS to the latest. You will notice faster response times from your Blackberry as well as an improvement in battery life. And not to mention it will also improve UMA and less memory leaks.

If you are at all worried about this, go to this link directly at BlackBerry's website to download AT&T's version of .231:

https://www.blackberry.com/Downloads/entry.do?code=577BCC914F9E55D5E4E4F82F9F00E7D4

Follow the instructions Kickstar's post gives you if you decide to use the link above to download the latest OS. Remember, AT&T's version will work on your phone - they all will!

Now, just know that any version you download, as Kickstar stated, includes English (US & UK versions). Your phone should automatically default to English (US); if not, you can go to Options->Language and set the input language to English US. Hope that helps!

I finally got around to putting the updated OS on there yesterday. Aside from it being a little slower booting up, I didnt notice much difference. It did have a bit more free memory.

Today though, it's all going to hell! My keyboard seems to be acting up with some applications. I'm getting double-characters when I hit some keys, and the menu button is acting erratically. (Rather than bringing up a menu, it's exitting the apps!)

I'm going to flash back to the stock OS and see if that fixes things. Hopefully that'll fix this nightmare!

Hmm that's weird. Try a battery pull before you end up going back to the stock OS.

Man that was weirrd. Something was slowing it way the heck down. On further investigation I'm starting to think it was an app that was causing trouble. I did a few reboots and battery pulls to no avail. Uninstalled a few of the apps, took out sim card, uninstalled a couple more apps. It seems to have gotten better after I took out that weatherbug app I had put on last night.

Something I did notice just down. Apparently if you hold down the menu button it brings up the app list, and if you hold down the back button it takes you to the home screen. Looks like maybe whatever was causing the problems was using so much cpu time that clicks were registering as the button being held down.

Everything seems to be normal now. I'll start reinstalling things I want on there one by one.

Whatever was causing the problem sure did eat up a lot of batteries. I took it off the charger at 845am and it was 100%. By 955 it was down to about 40%!

...

Ok put my Mobile Checkbook back on, and it's acting really weird for that app. The menu button still exits the app. Looks like it's still registering double or triple keypresses in there.

The easiest way to up is via the wireless upgrade manager under options--advanced options---wireless upgrade.  The full US version too!

Was quick and simple and backed everything up!

Turned out my problem with the mobile checkbook app was just that it wasn't compatible with that OS version.

Not quite sure what was causing things to get bogged down and drain the battery, though. Whatever it was had that hourglass going constantly.

I finally went into the desktop manager and removed all the apps that I'd downloaded. That cleared everything up and I'm running fine now.

As I stated in the Blog's comments...

My BB8900 has been crashing a lot with Java-script errors, so when I heard about this updated, I jumped on it ASAP.

I sync-ed my BB8900, checked for updates, went through the entire process {to get v4.6.1.231}. Now it seems to crash less often, but it still has given me the occasional one or two.

The biggest glitch is the "My Favs" option.  I try to "Minimize" it, and it won't let me.  Oh well, I hope some other "Squeeky-Wheel" gets RIMs attention so that this can be fixed.

Now that T-Mobile has upgraded to .231, is there any difference with getting this OS than the one that was on the market outside T-Mobile? Here's my hypothetical question: Say, for instance, you have a warranty issue and tell them you have .231. If this upgrade that I put on my BB8900 didn't come from T-Mobile, would I have to backup and re-install T-Mobile's .231 release? I know .250 is now available, but everything works great on my .231. I'm just wondering in the future if my BB starts acting up or goes defective, will me having .231 from AT&T (with vendor.xml file having been removed) be any sort of issue?

Hmmm, I really don't think the deleted vendor file will cause any problems. That is an excellent question though.

Thanks. I don't think it is a problem either, but I guess we never know if there's a code somewhere on the phone that tells T-Mobile it's their version, ya know? And that's what's got me thinking...
