Basically, it checks to make sure your version of the app is the newest. There's not a lot else to say, but go DL it, it's great.

Is there any other reason to have it? Going into my downloads in the market and seeing if it says free or installed next to the app is pretty easy as it is

I check the market every day for updates to installed apps, but aTrackDog found over 30 with updates available....and even listed those with updates on the developers' websites that haven't been posted to the market yet.

Just checking the market isn't good enough or easy enough--especially if you have a lot of apps installed.

I normally did it that way. Nice having an application simplify the process.
Windows checks for updates automatically. Shouldn't this intro phone have the ability to also? Just my opinion.

What would be really cool is if this app could run on a schedule and send a notification when apps were ready to be updated.  Unless it can already do that....

Desktop Windows may do this, but Windows Mobile doesn't.  Gotta compare apples and apples (so to speak) Wink

This app does something similar to the way Linux applications/updates are managed.  It's a great idea.  I agree with knytphal, though.  It should be able to check automatically...and perform the upgrades automatically.

Does checking that way cover all apps? Some seem missing on mine.  The efficiency this app offers and small size warrant an install.  Good app.

That doesn't always work anyway.  I have found updates for some that say "Installed" before and I've also seen a few list as "FREE" that were already up to date.  This is a cool app, but I definitely wish it could run once a day and notify you of any updates in the notification bar.  We should all email the dev for this request.

On this note, OI Update has been out for a long time and it does just this.  The one downside to OI Update is that devs have to code their apps to be compatible and it sounds like this TrackDog just automatically works with all apps.  As of right now I only have 3 apps that are compatible with OI Update.

Edit:  On the description of the app, the dev says background tracking of updates and notifications for updates are coming in a future release.  This will be one of the most useful tool type apps on the market once he gets this added!

The app rocks for several reasons:

1) The "my downloads" does not have all apps (unless you do not have a bunch)
2) Takes just a few seconds for it to check if on wifi and about a minute without.
3) Gives you options on what to do with the apps

I am a little concerned with it always in the background.  It then takes resources and power 100% of the time for something that only needs to be checked 1% of the time.  How hard is it
to open the shortcut and run it?  If background running is activated, I hope there is an option do disable it.

Update:  Would be nice to also have a new app alert option too...

I'm pretty sure he would allow you to disable this.  I also doubt it would be always running in the background.  If I were making the app, I would allow a user customizable setting to determine how often it would check.  Personally, I would just want it to check once a day.  Because of the way intents work in Android, his app wouldn't need to run all the time in the background, just at the time he or you set up and when that intent triggers.

Eh, I don't know whether or not the author is trying to sell the information he collects, but I won't assume.

Personally, I can deal with the 2 errors currently in the market (ShopSavvy and GasBot) and be pleased with the majority of them that get it right.  I do think he could fix this easily by requiring a minimum number of reports to confirm an update or by manually confirming reports as well.

Google is doing it for sure, regardless if this app is.  The G1 browser is a mining drill for information.

Still like the app.

good program but it bothers me sometimes for example right now. its telling me theres a new version of shopsavy. i go to the markey theres no new version so then i click on the option of going to the developers site and theres no link to download the new version there either...so why tell me theres a new version and not offer a way to get it? its done this a few times before. other than thats its been pretty good lol

From what I have read. The app checks the version of sofware on all phones that have atrackdog on it.  So if there is a beta limited release on a phone...it will say an update is available, but really the update may only be available to those testing the newer version.

This is why when you run the aTrackDog app, it specifically tells Devs who are running unreleased versions that they should disable tracking for their app so aTrackDog doesn't report that version any longer.  If the devs all follow this direction, it will be a non issue.

I have a few winmo apps that check them self for updates when you load them....
