Hello, I called up T-mobile's customer care today, I asked them if I can cancel the G1 data plan if i sell my phone. The rep said that I cant because it is a 2 year contract. So I am confused, how about if someone broke their phone and did not have the insurance they cant cancel their data plan? So they would be paying 25/35 a month for nothing?

You can remove it yourself by going to my.t-mobile.com and logging in.

There is no check box to uncheck it.

If you aren't using the phone, you don't need the phone specific plan.  They can see exactly what phone you are using and how long you have been using it for, so yes, if you aren't using the G1 anymore for whatever reason, you can take it off.

I don't know about online orders, but if you were to buy the phone in the store, you won't be able to walk out of the store with the phone without the data plan on your account.

Just call back and get a rep who isn't a moron.  You can make whatever changes you want to your plan.  The only thing your contract holds you to is keeping service active with T-Mobile, but you are not stuck with any plans or features.

This is why T-Mobile lost the JD Power Award this year.  The service continues to go down hill as more and more reps don't know how to do their job and are too dumb or lazy to look up the right info, or at least ask their supervisor when they don't know.  When I first got my G1, I had to call four times to have the plan added because so many reps told me they couldn't add it to my employee plan, which was wrong.

But nonetheless, this person was wrong.  Just call back and talk to a person who isn't retarded and you'll be good to go.  If another person says this, ask for their supervisor.

Thanks a lot jimbo! I will try that, and ya the rep's have changed. They are either retarded or too lazy to even care about the customer.
