Yes --- the device is useless without a data plan for it and it has to have the g1 plan.

I am curently posting this from the g1 itself.  More review later

What does the data plan allow you to do?
So far the G1, Sidekick, and BB must have some sort of data plan...or at least they are recommended.
The G1 seems to be the only one that you must have it in order to purchase the phone.

Yes but once you activate it you don't have to use the Gmail account again.  But a free push account that auto syncs contacts and calendar is not a bad deal for free.

Not entirely true, as soon as you turn the device on, it asks for you to enter your gmail account info or to create one.  It then INITIALIZES and confirms the information with GMAIL/GOOGLE before it will finish booting the device up!

The software was designed to access and communicate with Google/Gmail, before anything else.  So, yes .. you must have that data plan otherwise, you can't get to the phone feature/dialer to be able to make voice calls.  If you don't have the data plan, you're stuck with 911 calls only.

The million-dollar question:  Do you *have* to have the G1-specific data plan, or will any tmo data plan work?  Someone else in this forum said even the sidekick data plan worked on it.  Of course, as with most posts here so far, very little specific data were given.

you *HAVE* to have the G1 specific data plan, no ifs ands or buts, T-Mobile is redoing the entire way their Data is billed and pulled from the backend soon. While it may work, I wouldnt bank on it

Without even looking at the phone, that does not make sense. That means that when you roam outside the US without data plan you can't activate the phone and that you can't use it (for media) when you have no reception. If this is true, then this is a deal breaker.

By the way, it is already confirmed that the G1 will work with the $19.99 plan.

I'd have to agree with Al.  That seems a bit ridiculous.

as I mentioned on another thread
will try it with my VPN data service without changing to G1 data service
if it works, it'll be in my pocket

---------------------------------------------------------------------

I suggest G1 should have an option to backup user activation data onto the phone itself (will not be wiped out even after factory reset until user removes it), and lets user to restore it by user's own google account after factory reset, this can avoid utilizing data roaming when re-activating overseas

so ur wrong if the G1 had to have the G1 plan then it could not roam becasue there would be no 3G service and it wouldnt even matter if uhad the plan u wud be getting charged the regular money per megabyte.

Punctuation is your friend.  What exactly are you saying?  Roaming is a matter of agreements between tmo and other carriers.  I've never had roaming affect any data plan I've had.  And tmo doesn't charge by data usage in the US.

We still haven't really gotten any clear, definitive answer yet.  I'd love to hear from tmo how they're re-doing their data billing system and how it's going to work in the future.  There are just so many unanswered questions with this new phone and the 3G rollout at the same time.

Renmar,

It makes sense that there must be a data connection to activate the phone. It has to sync with Google before doing anything else. But there are two questions I'm still not clear on:
   1) Must the initial data connection be cell, or can it do its initial synchronization over WiFi? (This is not a question of contract, but one of technology.)
   2) Once initialization occurs, if the data connection is lost (no coverage) or turned off, does the phone revert to 911 only?

If you could clear those up, it would put to rest a lot of concerns.

If this is true, this means that the phone can't possibly be used outside of coverage areas even as a music player or on an airplane in wireless mode.  I will believe it when I see it.

If I can't use the music player while in flight mode the device will go back to T-Mobile. Something seems off about that. No coverage equates to a completely useless convergence device? I often write emails while on a flight and send once I have landed. If I can't do that, bye bye G1.

I wouldn't take that 15th day if I were you or T-Mobile will tell you tough luck.

You get 14 days to test the device in 49 states.  In California, you will get 30.

Prove it.  Take a picture in a mirror.  Sorry but I've seen too many claims over the years.  Thankfully with devices that have integrated cameras proof has become a whole lot easier.

EDIT:  T Mobile employee eh....never mind. Tongue
