HTC One X Review

Hey guys, I'm back at it again with a new unlocked phone. Let's get right to it...

Phone details: 4.7" 720p display, 32 Gigs of internal memory (25 Gigs for the user), 2.11 Gigs for apps, 1 Gig of RAM, quad core Tegra 3 chipset, 8 megapixel camera.

DESIGN: One big, thin slab of phone, lol. The sides are smooth (something I don't like), the material is light and it feels great in my hand. Although, there are times I am afraid it will slip out due to the smoothness of the sides. The phone is slightly curved. The camera lens sticks out and the actual glass protecting the lens is only slight recessed. A lot of One X owners worry about scratching the lens, including myself. The phone is definitely big, but thin and so you really leave with a feeling that it is wide. My One X is a smidget longer than my wife's GS2 and it is the same length as the One S.

SOFTWARE: Android 4.0.3, Sense 4.0. My Sensation XE received the Ice.Creme Sandwich update, however those with "older" HTC's will be settling for Sense 3.6. 4.0 is "lighter" in the sense of how it interacts with Android 4.0 but if you're a Sense fan like me, it still offers everything you are use to. Beats is included, you can use the software with other apps now.

HEADPHONES: I did not purchase the limited edition with the headphones. Imo, not worth it.

CONNECTION: Quadband GSM, Edge/2g only with T Mobile until the reframing/reframing of the 1900 MHz happens.

BATTERY LIFE: On at 8 am when I leave my house, ready to charge anywhere between 6-8pm which I feel is great. ICS adds great battery life and it clearly shows. One of the first things I noticed on my XE was how much longer it lasted since ICS, it is great to get this kind of usage from suchca large screen and non removable battery. Most of my time on the One X is text messaging, emails every 30 mins, FB updates, some web browsing and perhaps 30 mins of calling. My screen is set to 60% brightness in auto and I am connected to WiFi the majority of my time with the One X. My phone is also set to GSM and so its not constantly searching for high speed internensignal. I'm sure that's helping also.

MY OPINION: I love this phone. I haven't felt this way since I first laid eyes on the HD2! The screen is gorgeous. The colors pop, the resolution is amazing and the viewing angles are incredible. Comparing a non AMOLED (or any variant of) screen to the One X leaves a lasting impression on you. They look washed out compared to the One X. Needless to say, it is an incredible display. As far as the quad core Tegra 3, I honestly cannot tell the difference between this chipset and that of my dual core XE. The fact is, for a phone, these processors are pretty damn fast and efficient. It's not like comparing a cars engine where you can honestly feel and see a difference when accelerating, etc. It's a phone, I check my FB, Twitter, emails and play Angry Birds from time to time. The reasoning behind the international model vs AT&T's model was simply the 32 Gigs of internal.

I currently have a 32 Gig card in my Sensation XE and could not see myself with only 12 Gigs to start with (16 gigs on the One S and AT&T's One X, 12 Gigs is user available).

As far as Edge data, it sucks. The fact is, I can't wait for the reframing to happen. I will say, it does the job withemails, FB, etc. I have WiFi at home and at my office and I also have a hot spot for my business laptop but in reality, it would be great if my phone was able to connect to 3g data with T Mobile.

Ever since I caught wind of the One X, I knew I was getting one. I'be had mine since the weekend and so far I am pleased.

That is the best way to say it. I am getting by with Edge for now but I cant imagine it as my only option. Great phone though. AT&T customers shoukd be very happy despite the smaller internal space.

I would go insane if I had to deal with EDGE. Good thing u have WiFI at work and home. But anywhere else that doesn't have free wifi will suck. And yea, the AT&T customers should be happy, but being limited to 16GB OBS (w/o expandable) is really a downer. Oh, and AT&T disabled AWS/1700 so it wont work with Tmo's HSPA+ off the bat. Wonder how u unlock it?

I was over at XDA researching the One X before I bought it and ultimately decided with the international version solely for the 32 Gigs of internal and leaning heavily on the rumor that T Mo would be reframing 3g traffic to 1900 MHz to make room for LTE on its AWS bands.

I'm still confused with AT&T's version and if it actually has the 1700/AWS band. Supposedly, the chipset does, correct? The next problem would be, how do you go about unlocking that hidden band? I use to have an international Touch Diamond back in the day. Mine was a quadband GSM. At the time, HTC had a also sold a Touch Diamond with only 3 GSM bands available and the big thing was, someone had discovered a way to have the phone operate on all 4bands including the hidden band (AT&T 3g band) that was software disabled. I'm wondering if that's the case with AT&T's One X?  That would be really cool if there was a way to unlock the band we currently use for 3g. I don't think I would get rid of my One X in favor of AT&T's One X as I'm still dealing with 16 Gigs and their logo, lol.

Btw, in addition to WiFi at work.and at home, I also have a Hot Spot through Verizon for my work laptop, I am honestly good to go. However, I'd simply rather rely on my network for 3g.

The One S is a great introduction to the world of HTC and I've considered replacing my sons Sensation with one, however those with Sensations and Amazes aren't really benefiting and to some extent downgrading with some features (the Amaze already comes with 16 Gigs of internal AND micro SD slot). The One X on the other hand offers something newer to those already in the club. Larger, high def screen, thin body, etc.

Technology, you got to love it.

Yea, since there's no MicroSD slot, the MINIMUM should be 32GB. So that was a smart choice (plus no carrier branding). And I know everything there is to know about Tmo's network and PCS/1900 refarming thats in the processes now. Can't wait for that to be fully launched.

But yes, the SoC/processor SUPPORTS AWS HSPA+, but it not enabled. It can either be SW locked/hidden, or the actual antenna doesn't support AWS. Someone told me that has happened.

Thats convient to have a Verizon hotspot, but i'm sure its expensive, and I hope its LTE cuz their 3G/EVDO sucks (Sprints even worse).

And yea, Me and my girl checked out the One S today at t-mobile and it is a VERY nice phone. LOVED the solid construction of the body. And the screen actually looked pretty good, even tho yes it has pentile (yuk), but it wasn't noticeable at normal distance. I would love to upgrade my G2 to the One S, but I can hold out a bit more for the SGS3 (for the 720p and microSD). Hopefully it'll feel fine in my normal sized hand. Oh, and my girl fell in love with it. First she wanted the Amaze (upgrading from G2), but now she wants the One S. She loved the slimness, the solid construction, the camera, and the screen.

But yea, You gotta love this crazy pace in mobile tech.

Something you will never, ever complain about with the One S. It is a great phone, especially if you havent owned a Sensation or Amaze. I felt okay with it having a pentile display.

The hot spot is through work, lol. The coverege is there, the speed always isnt.

It has been an exciting 2nd quarter so far!

Anyways, lol yea, I always point her in the best direction that'll be good for HER. I like the One S, but being limited to 16GB is harsh. My girl will do fine with that from the G2. I'm waiting on the SGS3, unless something passes it by the time I throw my money at the screen, lol.

Well atleast the hotspot is free, but that EVDO speed is meh.

And I can't wait for see End of Q3 and Q4 for new phones and tablets!

Same here, looking forward to what maybe in the works. The GS3 looks cool, never been a huge fan of Touch Wiz but do appreciate where Samsung has taken there brand. I remember owning the the camera phone they came out with a while back, the one that looked like an actual camera from the back, lol.

You can replace the OEM Launcher with a ICS Launchers if u want to like Apex or Nova (I prefer Apex). But the new TW5 (aka Nature UX) seemed fine. But yea, no problem  =)

Thanks!  I did see that.  Honestly, I've been very fond of Sense since its very first iteration and so I'm not heavy into the flashing scene now a days.  Back with my Wing, Touch Diamond, TP2, HD2 I was all over it.  I must say, I'm very pleased with Android and HTC Sense.

Really looking forward to the reframing of our network for some high speed data on my One X though...
