I was looking over past news trying to figure out if there was a pattern to tmobile's sales.  I finally have the cash to migrate to a value plan, but i have to crunch a few more numbers.  It seems like without some sort of sale price on a phone, + a migration fee on top of it, it sort of wipes out the savings I'd otherwise have.

If I switch to a value plan now, can I get a phone later, when they are on sale, and just grab the sim cards from them?

First of all, are you in a contract now or out.  If you're in and you have to pay a migration fee, it's probably not worth it.

Here's a sample of a sale they did in December.  You had to switch to a value plan at that time, sign a 2 year deal, and then they would give you a rebate toward the phone:

You might want to wait for a sale like that in the future.

I don't know what you meant by wait for phones and grab SIM cards from them??

What he said.  It seems like with the value plan they are forcing sim cards on you (at least thru the web).  I am under contract with three of my five phones.  Im paying a lot compared to the value plans, but it seems like I would make the migration fee money back in just around six months.

However if I buy two new phones ( I want the sgsII, something cheaper for the wife) it seems like my savings wash away.  Sure I get a new phone and all so I shouldn't be crying, but I'm worried that the value plan will go away before they have another sale.

Like I said I really haven't crunched the numbers, and was more looking for "yeah they usually have a valentines day sale"

I'm pretty sure that most value plans promotions that I have seen are for those new to the value plan.  I don't think they'll give you promo prices on the devices if you're already on the plan.  So it's best to wait until you're ready to get a new device before you make the switch.

And I think the best deals are in the store for the value plan (such as the deal I linked to)

I don't think you need a new SIM card for a value plan if you are an existing customer.
