I currently have a dumbphone that I use very lightly (~10 minutes and a few texts per day on average), thus the pay-as-you-go service which really suits me. I just pay 100 bucks for 1000 minutes whenever I need it, which is less than twice a year. I recently broke my old mp3 player and have been thinking about how best to replace two devices with one. I would be interested in Republic Wireless but it sounds like it could be a bit longer before they go out of beta.

I  saw the Exhibit II at amazon   which from their page sounds like it would work with pay as you go (many of the reviews there seem to be using a monthly minutes/data without contract). When I called T-mob customer service the rep said I could keep my number and the same service with a new phone, but I am not sure she really understood my question. Has anyone done this? It seems almost good to be true to use pay as you go and be able to use wi-fi at home and work for apps, streaming, browsing. I also like the wi-fi calling even if it counts against my minutes, it would help with parts of my building that doesn't get reception. Is it too good to be true? Can I really keep pay-as-you-go with this upgrade (or another android/windows phone if you have one to recommend)?

Am I understanding that you're a current T-Mobile Monthly 4G customer?

If so, you can definitely use the Exhibit II on a M4G pay-as-you-go plan.  Your only speedbump may be in pricing.  I know T-Mobile stores sell the Exhibit II as a M4G phone for $199.99 with a new activation (and at least $50 pin sale).  They don't offer that pricing for existing M4G plans.  Instead, you would have to pay the full retail of $329.99.

Now, if you can get the device somewhere cheaper than that, just pop your SIM card in and you're ready to go.

I don't currently use monthly 4g, I do prepaid pay as you go (usually the $100 for 1000 minutes). If you click the link to Amazon in my original post you can see the service I'm talking about, which I interpret to mean I don't need a monthy 4g plan.  They do have some cheap m4g plans, but I would be completely fine with no 4g if I can use wifi instead for surfing / streaming, and 2g/3g and/or wifi calling for phone calls.

I ordered the phone over the weekend, so I guess I'll find out when I try to put my SIM card in.

"Monthly 4G" is the name of T-Mobile's prepaid service.  Your device will work.
