Hey everyone! I'm planning on purchasing an android smartphone sometime during mid to late December of this year. I'm having some trouble deciding what handset would be best for me.

I've looked over several phones including:
  • HTC Amaze 4G
  • HTC Sensation 4G
  • Samsung Galaxy S II
  • LG G2X

I've also heard rumors of the Samsung Galaxy Nexus.

Can anyone give any recommendations/ opinions on these phones?

Will there be any other handsets released prior to or just after Christmas that would be worth considering?

Things i'm most concerned with:
  • Phone Speed/ Screen Quality
  • Size: Not interested in huge handsets.
  • Battery life.
  • UI: Sense > Standard Android > TouchWiz > Else
  • Call Quality.
  • Build Quality/ Aesthetics.
  • Ability to Update to ICS.

Since u said Sense> (lol), go with the Amaze 4G.. It has been confirmed by Tmo/HTC that it will be upgraded to ICS, plus it has 1GB of RAM (compared to Sensations 768MB), and a better camera than Sensation.. Next option is G-Nexus, but we don't know yet if Tmo will subsidize it tho.. Other than that, there are better phones that have been annouced like those two HTC phones (Edge, and something else), plus others.. Also everyone is waiting for the Galaxy S3 announcement.

Yea, I've heard some good stuff about the Amaze, but I've also heard that the handset is quite large. I guess I'll have to actually play around with it first to see for myself. I'm interested in the Galaxy Nexus too, but the details on the release seem quite hazy and I'm not sure if I want to wait too far into next year.

Do you know if the Sensation 4G will also receive ICS?

I held the Amaze 4G in my hands and its fine.. but yea, try it out in-store for yourself to be the judge.. u just have to get used to a bigger size, plus u see alot more and able to text better/easier.. G-Nexus is up in the air, unless u want to pay full price for the quad-band HSPA+ version.. and Sensation has been confirmed by HTC it will be upgraded also.. Tmo might delay it abit after HTC sends it to them (for their own tweaks and additions).. but Amaze 4G is the better phone because of the HW (camera improvement to 2.2f) & internal upgrades (1GB RAM).

Hi all,

I hate to hijack someone else's thread but I'm kind of in the same boat. I am currently using a (now dated) myTouch 3g Slide... and my upgrade date is coming up 3/23 finally.

I think I've been gravitating toward Galaxy S II. I do know I want an Android and need Swype as a feature. I saw the Galaxy Nexus post but to my understanding is only available on Verizon? Does anyone know if it's coming to TM anytime soon? If so, is it worth waiting for or should I go with my impatient gut for the Galaxy SII? Is there something (else) newer coming after 3/23 that I should wait for?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

The GS2 will be a good choice (even the Amaze 4G), but the upcoming devices will be even better with updated processors and screens. Tmo will have new releases in Feb and March. Look out for GS Blaze 4G (hopefully the 720p SAMOLED screen is true), and the HTC Ville. As for the G-Nexus, we don't know yet. I doubt it. But u can get the unlocked HSPA+ version that will work on Tmo's HSPA+ network. But u can't get it subsidized tho =( .. So u gotta pay about $550. There has been talk about a G-Nexus Plus with a updated chip and camera, so who knows at this point. And by the time your contract is up, there will be lots of more info on released and upcoming phones.

I'm biting my lip going with an HTC phone. My boss has had nothing but problems with his Evo. Also, it is my understanding that Swype isn't installed on any HTC phones, right? I have been spoiled by this feature. The Samsung phones come with Swype preinstalled right? I guess I'll have to circle back and see what phones they will have toward the end of March. Thank you again.

http://beta.swype.com

It works on most phones. I think it now supports 720p screens (ala Galaxy Nexus).
