I have noticed that my phone is becoming bogged down with sms messages so I am trying to delete the message threads, but the slide tries for about 15 minutes then I just have to force close as it locks up.....whats the deal? how can I delete these messages?

Unfortunately the Sense messaging app doesn't auto-delete messages after a certain limit for a thread, so if the thread gets too long, you're stuck like this.

Yeah, it sucks, blame HTC for Sense and having to redo every app to make it fit within their UI standards. I think the only real solution is hope that your SMS threads aren't that long or back up stuff using AppBrain or Titanium Backup (root), then do a wipe.

The threads get too long in Messaging and Messages crawls. Naturally, you try to delete them to make Messages workable again. But they can't do this because there's too many somehow. You never run into this with stock Android because stock automatically deletes texts after a certain limit (200 normally.) Blame HTC.

With my myTouch 4G i can go to the messages app, settings, Delete old messages.

Why can't they delete the messages manually?

If you for some reason cant do it manually go to settings (from your home screen), applications, manage applications, messages, clear data. That should delete all of you messages.
