ok so to say i'm a little ticked off is to put it lightly.
i got my mytouch slide with the promise that i would have 2.2 within a month of it coming out. so here it is 8 months later and still no 2.2. if i had known i wouldn't get the 2.2 when promised i would have held off for the g2. i wanted the g2 more then this brick anyways. only reason i got a new phone when i did was that i was tired of milking along my g1. and no i'm not going to root my phone, i don't feel that i should have to do any kind of mod to my phone to get what was promised to me when i bought it.

thanks for letting me vent.

Dont buy a phone based off what it will get.

Sorry but your mad because you bought a phone with 2.1 on it.

Exactly.  Google could not care less about whether or not a manufacturer will update your operating system.  They only care about sales of a new phone with an Android system on it.  Once it's sold, they're onto the next phone model.  They'll even let manufacturers still sell phones with 1.6 on it.  Google has no quality control in place to prevent this, or to require manufacturers to upgrade the operating system.  And you're right, you shouldn't have to do a mod to the phone just to get what you were promised.  But unfortunately, in the world of Android, that's not the reality of the situation.

Honestly you just laid down a catalyst for a argument.....

Moving on, Sorry you weren't given you android 2.2 as of yet but, tmobile did promise you a upgrade to android 2.2 before the year is up..i remember that...and with all the android handsets tmobile has i guess its taking a little while to get this stuff done, but you will get your update...we all will...so forget the negativities and enjoy your android phone for the mean time....when your update comes, just think how happy you'll be...plus your not missing too much with 2.2 just the flash player...

HTC did say that all devices in 2010 will get a 2.2 update. The Slide will probably take some more time because it's running a custom version of a custom UI (Espresso Sense.)

The real big thing about 2.2 is JIT. JIT gives performance boosts and a lot better battery life. It's definitely helped my Slide (running CM6 because Sense makes me angry.)

they already have Espresso 2.2 done (aka mytouch HD/4G).. with a few tweaks, it shouldn't take long.. i bet they're just waiting for the HD/4G to be released, then start the OTA 2.2 update.

with all the android handsets tmobile has i guess its taking a little while to get this stuff done,

It's just continual excuse after excuse as to why something can't get upgraded.  How large of a company is Google again?  Wouldn't you think they'd be able to get a timetable together and stick to it.  Why give people false information about update availability just so they get suckered into buying a device?

Dude, you keep speaking about google....its not google. All they did was create the operating system, and thats it. Once released, its handed over to htc and tmobile. They're the ones who need to release the update for thier products.....google is long done with android 2.2, they're focused on 2.3 and whatever else...

google is long done with android 2.2,

Exactly my point.  They're long done.  They don't care one bit about the customer's experience with the operating system.  They don't care that manufacturers are abandoning their customers with older operating systems.  They don't care about what junky device gets the operating system.  But they are the first to step up when they're bragging about how many devices Android's on aren't they?

Google should be making sure that customers are not left hanging.  Do they not care about the quality of something that their name is plastered on?

There you go again dude...wtf is talking about quality here, the discussion is when is this guy getting an upgrade on his phone...all i stated is that google is not in control of when the updates roll out, its up to the carrier and the manufacturer...dont take my words and twist them around.

Google licenses the operating system to the manufacturer.  They can control as much or as little as they want to with the licensing agreement.  It's quite clear from their inaction, that Google chooses to do nothing about situations such as the OP ran into.

It's not just the My Touch Slide.  It's one Android device after another.

What are you not understanding here jet, your constant ranting about Google this and that when Google has nothing to do with this...the OS is there for anyone to download royalty free. The only phone Google updates is the nexus one...the carriers and manufacturers are the only ones that determine what you get and when you get it. Fragmentation is not Google's fault. All versions are there to download if you want it...if the mts doesn't have 2.2 yet talk to Tmobile and htc. I doubt Google has the source code for sense to bypass htc and upgrade one of their phones....please read the first line of rule one..cause I Dont think you get it all all and stop listening to daddy jobs, he doesn't know everything...he's just a man.

It is free, but it has a license:

Google released most of the Android code under the Apache License

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Android_%28operating_system%29

Fragmentation is not Google's fault.

Of course it is.  Google set up the system.  I don't know why you're trying so hard to defend them.  They set up the rules to play by.  And those rules are harming the end user.  That's a simple fact.

They control the whole thing.  They have all the power.  They could deny future versions of the OS to operators who treat their customers poorly.  But they are too greedy.

Then they give carriers like T-Mobile the opportunity to pillage another $15 / month from their customers for tethering.  T-Mobile would not have been able to do that had Google not included that feature in the OS.

I don't know why YOU are trying so hard to bash them and start arguments on here in what seems like any post where someone has an issue with Android.  You don't like Android or Google.  We get it.  Move on and stop trying to start arguments.

I'm not starting any arguments. I'm stating the facts. You certainly didn't refute anything i said. All you can do is make a post trying to order someone around. How about keeping your comments to the topic at hand?

My aplogies to the O.P. for this nonsense. This is over and done with..lets continue our discussion without disrespect please, and keep the bashing away.

wow guys. i really didnt mean for it to blow up like this. dont get me wrong i love android. i think that the system is outstanding. i dont want to point any one finger at someone with this but i have a strong feeling that me not getting my update is on tmobiles end. i think they have been holding on to it for the release of the g2 and or the 4g. my big issue is that i was not given what i was promised when it was promised to me. a strong part of me wishes i had just bought a new battery for my g1 and just held off for the g2. its a way better phone then the slide anyways. i have had times with the slide where i really wanted to pull my sim out and put it back in my g1 just because i dont like the form or keyboard on it. another thing that erks me is that my friend got a 2.2 update for her 3g and thats kind of what put the nail in the coffin and made me want to make the first post.

sorry if i have started some big ordeal. i have been a tmonews lurker for a few years now and like how the website runs. i have been a tmobile user since they first came to the u.s. and will more then likely never leave them. i can say 10+ because i was a voicestream customer when tmo bought them out. thats right. i just went old school like that. their tech maybe a step behind at times but man when they update they rocket past everyone.
