Just wondering...
How is this "missing ROM" different from seemingly-similar missing ROM on my TP2?
The official specs on HTC say "ROM: 512 MB" while Task Manager on my TP2 shows "Storage: Total: 253.94 MB, In Use: 118.28 MB, Free: 135.66 MB".  So...isn't this another example of "missing ROM" -- about half of total in this case?
Is this somehow fundamentally different than the G2 situation or have people just forgotten (or never knew about) what happened in 2009 when the TP2 was released?  (I know the TP2 situation was explained long ago...but I don't remember what exactly was said...because I didn't really care then, either. ;) )

No theres a difference actually. The ROM being used is less than 300MB which is normal. But on a 4GB internal flash to have 2.6GB missing total just for the ROM is a problem. No phone takes that much space.

So we'll just have to see. I bet some smarty will prove what's what before the weekend is over.  Then if a phone blog -- TmoNews and/or Engadget -- publish that proof then we'll see what T-Mo says about that (unless T-Mo is proven to be correct).

There's quite a lot of hysteria going on about it over at the T-Mobile Forums G2 board...pretty-much a crazy mess over there anyway.  Hard to sift through all the clueless and repetitive BS to find anything of value.  ;)

Oddest thing is if it had the 1.5GB ROM like the Desire Z it would have 1.2GB ROM left & the G2 has 1.2GB ROM left lol.

Tmobile might know its a problem but just wanted to say something.

But saying it has 4GB rom but only giving 2gb is unexceptable. I remember on my nexus one when it came with 2.1 only gave us like 100mb free space out of the 512. But once froyo hit it freed up half that ram and now we have 230 free.

I wouldn't be surprised if the desire z has 4gb of rom but HTC sense and their apps are using most of it.

Dude, my N1's memory never changed - you must have lucked out.

what does it show?

If you have 2gbs showing its because the other 2gbs is going toward app space. so you have a 2 gig app partition on your ROM.

Its on the Upcoming Phones G2 page the ROM that the device is using now is 129MB w/o expanding & expanding takes around 300MB estimated of the 3.8GB chip.

Other phones that have 512MB ROM on Froyo cant be taking 2GB cuz its not there dont you find something strange about that?

App space available on the first boot is 1.2GB.

the G2 has 4 gigs worth of ROM built into the phone. Their is a 2 gig app partition (divider). the divider is for app space. So you have 2 gigs to put your apps on it that are downloaded from the market. most androids have a couple hundred megs. ever android does not use 2 gigs as a partition. it is up to who made it to decide how big the app space is.

Look at this lines 101-104.

This is the Kindle it uses the same exact same thing.

100204:021240 mmc0: Using open-ended mode on Sandisk eMMC
100204:021240 mmc0: Using block addressing
100204:021240 mmc0: new high speed MMC card at address 0001
100204:021240 mmcblk0: mmc0:0001 SEM04G 3866624KiB

Thing is that they shouldnt have done that much out of 4GB.

It looks like the current going theory is that the internal memory is indeed  4GB (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=8425954&postcount=288), but that Android does not yet support a partition for Internal Memory> 2GB, something that the HD2 ROM developers have had to work around, (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=8429161&postcount=306) and might explain the strange Internal Memory/Internal SD config of the Vibrant (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=8429414&postcount=307).  If this is true, then while there isn't much that we can do to claim that space right now, it's likely that with Gingerbread or before, we'll get access to that extra 2GB of space.

Yes we know what the issue is now. So your correct. Im going to the Google Dev community to report it.

My report is here, so you can join me:

http://code.google.com/p/android/issues/detail?id=11652&can=5&colspec=ID%20Type%20Status%20Owner%20Summary%20Stars#makechanges

Theres evidence that the Kindle has the same exact chip thats in the G2 & its reporting is correct but the G2 is not & the Vibrant isnt & all the others are probably reporting the same.

UPDATE:

Why didnt you tell me you were missing INTERNAL PHONE MEMORY lol.

How much app storage?  On my Incredible, it supposed to have 8gb, but besides obvious formatting sectors that takes space, device app storage was allocated too.  Net result is 6.6gb of available space from the 8gb.  Inc has 748mb for apps, but you run into problems after going past 400mb (Low on space error).

If the G2 has about 1.8gb of internal device app storage (most Android 2.2 or lower will work with), that is where the rest of the memory is.  VZW did not do a good job of explaining this to consumers- perhaps same for Tmo?

This puppy (G2) is about a year late ;)

Added: not talking about apps2sd, but actual out of the box, device storage for apps.  If almost 2gb, that is where the space went (allocated to user storage and stock apps) and the 512mb rom is only for the OS.  This is the best design ATM and plenty of space for future OS updates :)

Too be honest, I don't know - I just know I had about 25mb free before 2.2 and after the final 2.2 update and into 2.2.1 I still only have around 20 - 25mb free.  Really havent had any room to install any new apps either.

That's the annoying part about these phones with only 512MB of RAM. Phones like the Evo, Galaxy S, iPhone, and Nokia phones with these high amounts of internal storage such as 8GB, 16GB, 32GB, etc put us to shame.

Still the cap with 2.2 and lower is about 1.8gb of internal app storage.  Even then, most people start running into problems after 400 to 500mb, since Android will start showing "Low on space" errors, even though they have hundreds or even a gig left of storage space (Android bug- BIG bug).

Even though there is apps2sd, the constraint is STILL the device space.  Examples of apps:

Google Earth puts 15mb on device and 15mb on sd
NOVA puts 15mb on device and couple hundred mb on sd
Sandstorm puts 16mb on device and couple hundred megs on sd

If you start adding the apps up, apps2sd is still constrained by device storage and Android 2.2 and lowers design.  Most 3D games put at least 10mb on device storage.

Both games (NOVA and Sanstorm) rock, BTW :)
