This is BY FAR the easiest jailbreak ever! THANK COMEX!

Ok so let's begin:

1. Update to iOS 4.0.1 (or 3.2.1 for iPad) in iTunes (must have the latest iTunes. Download here: http://apple.com/itunes/)

2. After you've updated to iOS 4.0.1 (or 3.2.1 for iPad), launch Safari on your iPhone (Make sure you're connected to WiFi)

3. Go to this website on your iPhone/iPad: www.jailbreakme.com

4. Slide your finger across where it says "Slide to Jailbreak"

5. Wait while it jailbreaks your iPhone 4/3GS/3G. Shouldn't take long.

6. Within minutes you'll have a jailbroken iPhone/iPad!

Reboot your iPhone (just in case).

Enjoy!

NOTE: The iPhone Dev Team will be releasing iPhone 4 unlock shortly (a few final tests). For those on the iPhone 3GS/3G, you may unlock your iPhone 3GS/3G using the Dev Team's ultrasn0w (which still works on iPhone 3G/3GS on 4.0.1). The Dev Team has released Ultrasn0w for the iPhone 4!

Directions for iPhone 4/3GS/3G unlock:

1. Once you've jailbroken your iPhone 4/3GS/3G on iOS 4.0.1, launch Cydia. Go to Manage>Sources. Touch on “Edit” and then on “Add”. You will be prompted to enter a URL source. Type in: http://repo666.ultrasn0w.com and press “Add Source”.

2. After installation is completed. Search for: ultrasn0w in Cydia and install this application. This app will automatically unlock your iPhone 4/3GS3G so that you can use it with any GSM carrier.

And you're done! You now have an iPhone 4/3G/3GS jailbroken and unlocked on the newest OS 4.0.1!

If anyone has any issues, let me know.

Yes, 100%.

I've already jailbroken my iPad, both of my iPhone 3GS, and a friend's iPhone 3G. It works!

Do you have an AT&T sim card lying around the house (doesn't need to be activated). Or do you have a friend with AT&T?

All you need to do is insert the AT&T SIM card into the iPhone and then connect to iTunes. It will get you to the homescreen. Then jailbreak and unlock.

then i went to jailbreakme.com on the iPhone in safari and get an error message...."a server with the specified host name could not be found"

edit

ALL GOOD. I saw on twitter @comex said to reboot safari instead of hitting "retry".
it worked!

My apps aren't syncing up in itunes for some reason...but thats easy...

Just wondering, does this Unlock also work with the iPhone 4 or is it only compatible with the 3G/3GS?

Apple is not updating the iPhone 2G to OS4, so this tool is not for the 2G.

Just wondering, does this Unlock also work with the iPhone 4 or is it only compatible with the 3G/3GS?
Yes, the unlock for the iphone 4 has been released.

Refer to the original post at the top of the page. I've updated with directions.

Kickstar, I  upated to the 4.01 and went to jailbreakme.com and it keeps crashing. It downloads but doesnt jailbreak even after restarting the phone. When I go back to the website it says the installer crashed last time ou tried to jailbreak  it might work if you try again. Please advise.  Now i have a brick!

Edit* It is working now, i had to do a fresh restore thanks!
However MMS is not working again, is there a patch for this on Cydia? I have all the correct settings in my Network data

I have a question why is Apple still trying to stop ppl from Jailbreaking & Unlocking when its LEGAL to do so? Isnt what they are doing now ILLEGAL?

Device: Samsung Galaxy Note II
Baseband:
Recovery:
Kernel: [3.0.31]
ROM: [4.1.1 - JellyBean][xxxxx]

The only thing that changed is its not a violation of the DMCA, not a mater of legal or not legal.  There might be some debate on whether or not Apple has the right to void your warranty for jail-breaking your iPhone, they definitely are under no obligation to support it or make it easier for you.

Hey Kickstar... I've got a REAL rookie question about jailbreaks/unlocking in general... Being a relative rookie at the iPhone, it's not intuitively obvious WHERE the SIM card lives and how to replace the 'factory installed' SIM card with another??

I really do want to get this phone but I need some advice and guidance on how to go about getting the iPhone 4 jail broken for TMO....HELP@!!

UPDATE: Found my answer..Thanks ANYWAY !!!

How do you unlock an iPhone 4 and use it on T-MO when the SIM cards are different sizes?
I can't just put my card in, like I did on a 3GS...

you have to modify your tmobile sim to fit the new Micro sim card area. There are tutorials on how to do this online and youtube
