Hi there, I'm new to the forums and need a little help on the Vibrant. I can't figure out how to set up ringtones on each contact? Some  ringtones are still set from the G1 but most of them don't play when I get a call. Is there a way to fix them and add new ringtones? I also tried using ringdroid to add them in but still didn't work. Can y'all help me? Thanks.

I also have a related question!  How do you set a ringtone that is not pre loaded into vibrant?
I mean is there a way I can add music and make ringtones out of it and set them as my default ringtone.

Thanks.

How to assign a ringtone to gmail contact on Samsung Vibrant This question is Assumed Answered. These steps are used for how to assign a specific ringtone to a gmail contact on the Samsung Vibrant. You will not be able to do this if the contact is on the sim card, facebook, or gmail as of now. (Future updates may change this).

1) On home screen tap contacts
2) While in the phonebook tap menu, then more, and click on import/export
3) Then select export to sd card ( it will then ask you to confirm your selection, select yes. This can take some time based on how many contacts are on the device).
4) Once export is completed, access the phonebook again and tap menu, then more. Go back to import/export
5) Then select import from sd card, a screen will then pop up and give you the option as to where you want to save the contacts.
6) Options: Gmail or phone or if you have a corporate email this will also be an option. Make sure you import them to the phone in order to assign a ringtone to the contact.
7) The device will then start reading from the vcard on the device. (This will also take some time based on how many contacts are on the device). Note: Now each contact will then have the little g for Google and phone icon next to the contact in your phonebook instead of having to create seperate contacts.

You can now select a ringtone to an individual contact two ways:
1) From the music player long press the ringtone you want to assign and select "set as", then select where you want the ringtone assigned. You will have 3 choices: Voice call ringtone, Individual ringtone, and Alarm tone.
2) On home screen tap contacts (do this after you imported the contacts from the sd card), then long press the contact you want to have the ringtone assigned, then select edit, then scroll down and select the desired ringtone and select save. Note: With contacts that are saved to the phone, this will also allow you to assign individual caller id photos."

if the contacts are only synced with G-Mail, it will NOT let you set ringtones by default.  You'll have to actually add each contact to the phone as a "phone" contact(you'll know its a phone contact because it'll have a lil green phone icon next to the contact name as opposed to the google or facebook symbol).  Or....use ringdroid or ringo free and you cn set up individual contact ringtones

I have hundreds of contacts.  It seems like a bit of overkill to copy all of my contacts to my phone in order to have my wife and kids have their own, special ringtones.

Is there a simple way of copying a single contact from my Google contact list to my phone?

Hello, I'm new as well and I find the same 'feature' quite annoying.

Ringdroid doesn't work - it will allow you to select a contact and apply the ringtone but the phone will ring with the default ringtone.

Currently importing contacts to the phone isn't only highly inconvenient, but can also prove to be quite confusing. Especially if you have lots of contacts. Not only will some info. 'duplicate' and double up under the contact (birthdays, addresses, etc.) but you also lose grouping from Gmail contacts.
This means that if/when you change your phone - should you have decided to make use of the group options in the Samsung Vibrant, you lose ALL of that if you go to a different phone. This makes the cloud backup of Gmail contacts essentially no longer as useful as it was on say, the G1 - which downloads and sets your contacts up on your phone as they are setup online.

-quirks:

You lose groups (so if 100 people are listed under Family and 10 under Coworkers and 50 under Friends and another say, 200 under Facebook - they all become smooshed into 1 contact list in Gmail contacts without labels/folders)

You lose nicknames and filing preferences - so if you want to refer to 'Joan Hatchett' as Mom or 'Jason Maldorn' as Champ, you can't.

You'll have to PAY attention so you add info to the gmail contact part of your new linked contact list, or your information won't be saved to gmail contacts online. If you accidentally add 2 numbers and 2 emails to the phone section and you switch phones or format - you lose that information. Sure you can backup in Kies or on the Phone but then you run the risk of reimporting old/non current information should you not micromanage.

This isn't just about individual ringtones, believe me - this 'must import contacts to phone to assign pictures and sounds to them' is a much bigger inconvenience than people realize. And the fact that the Samsung UI doesn't respect the gmail contact labels/options means that it's no longer a 1 step process to switch phones. Before it was pretty much "sign into your google account" and you'd be set with your contacts.

People who've owned G1s and Nexus Ones etc. are going to find themselves peeved at this little requirement.
