i really doubt it cost more then $40..

I'm really not going to argue with you about this.  You're pulling that $40 number for parts out of thin air.  You obviously haven't done any research on this.  Just because they make some of the stuff in sweat shops doesn't mean you can get everything, display and processor included for $40.  A Qualcomm 1Ghz Snapdragon processor isn't a little trinket in a toy store.

This article clearly shows that just the parts that go into the Nexus One is approximately $174.  A far distance away from the $40 that you claim:

Ok.. it might not be $40. maybe im exaggerating a bit even tho im sure they arent paying $174.. that might be a retail price for that spec part. the price u or I might pay if we wanted to design our own phone..

im not trying to start an argument nor am i phone building expert.. im just saying that even at $329 they are making about a 80-150% profit. There is soo much money in phones and phone sales it is ridiculous. I have several friends in the phone retailing buisness.. these guys are paying next to nothing for some of the brand new devices.

You're sure?  Based upon what? If you've got the evidence to back up your claims, post your sources.

Here's a very detailed breakdown of part costs in the iPhone4...and that's $187.51 (same price range as the other devices)

http://www.isuppli.com/Teardowns-Manufacturing-and-Pricing/News/Pages/iPhone-4-Carries-Bill-of-Materials-of-187-51-According-to-iSuppli.aspx

Where's your breakdown that shows anything close to $40 for the Nexus One?

What brand new devices?  What is "next to nothing"?  Cite facts, specific models and prices if you're using that to justify your claims.

I see that you're trying to make all of these wild statements with nothing to back them up.

I said that $40 is an exageration..

next to nothing=$52 a peice for the Mytouch slides.. they resell them seperate make lots of profit.. sell FREE with new line yadda yadda. how do the mfgs sell a device less then 3x what it cost to make to their retailers?

see what Im getting at? same goes for everything.. not just phones. there are ways to break down cost of product..

take car sales for an example... cars have an MSRP, dealer invoice, holdback, then what the dealership actually pays for the car. The MFG is making money right off the bat selling the cars to the dealerships.. how? because their invoice price or COST of unit is inflated to a retail price. sure it includes their charge for promotion costs and what not.. but the mfg gets paid from the retailer not the new owner of the car. the dealership sells the car over the price they paid the MFG to earn a profit.

If $52 is anywhere close, it obviously includes a credit for a commission for signing someone up on a new account.  That doesn't apply in this situation.

The wholesale price that matters is the one they pay for a non contract device.  That's going to be a lot higher because it won't be subsidized by T-Mobile and will be able to cover typical smartphone costs that I have posted earlier.

And yes, I know that car dealers make a profit by selling a car for more than they paid the maunfacturer.  I think most people know that.

Yeah... That seems kinda low. $174 is more reasonable. I remember when the G1 came out it cost about $120 to make it. Look:

Right.  And for the record, if any wholesaler wants to sell me brand new MyTouch3G Sldies for $52 each, I'll place a big order and turn them around on ebay for 3 or 4 times that and they'll sell quickly.

You mean they'd open a brand new account within weeks of me canceling the first one? Or do you mean after the 90 or  120 day period?

No.  Let me clarify my suggested procedure:

1.  Order SIM card with a low cost Even More Plus plan.
2.  Once that account is active go on Google and add an additional individual line to your account.  Buy the N1 for $180.
3.  Put SIM card from step #1 into the N1 and start using it.
4.  Call T-Mobile and cancel account #2.
5.  Port your Sprint number over to account #1 whenever you're ready.

Is the Google webpage going to continue selling the N1 until TM gets off its ass and puts it in their stores?

Nobody knows for a fact that they will ever sell the device at T-Mobile.  Google just said they were going to sell them at retail stores.  They may only be able to get them into stores like Best Buy.

Would this procedure work if I even cancel the line that I opened in step 1.  I want to get the N1 but due to my family plan, I'm not eligible.  Can't open a new line in my wife's name through Google because she doesn't have a SSN.  T-Mobile will open an account in her name with a deposit.  Could I then use that to order a N1 from Google with a new line2, cancel line2, keep the N1 hoping that the 150 ERF doesn't come through and then cancel line1 with T-Mo.

This is exactly what I did but there was no deposit required. I got the bill today for her canceled account--$7.83. That took my total cost just over $200 (pending ERF)

Thanks! Did you open a Even More or Even More Plus account in her name?

EDIT: Never mind, just figured it out .. need a EM plan for the google phone.  Setup an account with T-Mobile, waiting for the sim to activate and then order N1.

You set up an account with T-Mobile BEFORE ordering the phone? I'm afraid that's bass ackwards. You set up the account by ordering the phone on Google. You have to order a new line of service through Google to get the $179 price.

Yeah but in order to order a new line through Google I need an existing line with T-Mobile.  Google won't let me order a new line of service through them due to her lack of SSN and insufficient credit.
My plan is
1. Open a EM line (line 1) at T-mobile
2. Add a new line 2 through Google to line 1
3. Cancel line 2 after N1 is received
4. Cancel line 1 after line 2 is canceled

I think you're over thinking it!  You should be able to get upgrade pricing as long as you dont open the 1st line with a subsidized phone purchase.  So in theory you should still be able to upgrade your 1st line and thus have no need for a 2nd line to make things even more complicated with canceling.

Just dont buy a sub phone when you open her a line and it should work.

Ok.. I think I'm on the same page then - I've opened a new account with Tmo for SIM only no phone purchase.  Next step is to upgrade to N1 using that account and then cancel account after N1 arrives.

Google doesn't give the same price for the upgrade.  It's $279 for upgrade.  To get the $179, you have to open a new line.

You are apparently correct.  Prior to making my last post (a little over an hour ago), I checked the site to confirm the $279 upgrade price.  After seeing your post, I went back on the site and it now says:

Sorry, folks...

The Nexus One is no longer available for purchase directly from Google.

So I guess the answer to this thread is now: try Ebay or Craigslist.  Glad I acted when I did!
