my brother just got his cliq today and it will not vibrate. he went into the ringer/notification settings and under the two sections (i think one is for when the silent button is switched), he has "vibrate" checked. the vibrate icon shows up at the top of the screen as well, but still nothing. is there another option he's overlooking? thanks in advance.

Some phones have overheating problems which can cause the vibrate to stop working. I've had a few devices vibrate not work due to an overheating problem or its just defected so take it back to the store.

thanks for the reply. i guess i'll have to exchange it. he even downloaded the ring toggle app and it didn't work, hard reset and software update. it sucks because we ordered it online, so now we have to wait for them to ship us a new one.

yes, it got really, really hot. do you think it's honestly correlated? is there a chance the new cliq will have the same problem? i called t-mobile and they're allowing us to pick up at a store tomorrow.

I'm going to be honest & say it will happen sooner or later. For some reason if you use the phone to talk to talk constantly & use services it seems to start overheating which happens to a bunch of smartphones. When the phone reaches a certain temp the sensor in the phone will make the vibrate stop & in for awhile ull experience it not working when its really hot. Then later on it will completely stop working. Theres nothing that can be done at this time & no matter what smartphone u pick up u may end up having the problem. So you may end up lucky with the next one but eventually it will end up overheating.

Yes the problem is related & really only have this problem with HTC phones which makes me wonder if Motorola used something similar in the CLIQ that HTC uses.

oh i see. thanks for the info. i'll keep that in mind. this is my brother's first smartphone. heck, even i've never used a smartphone before, so we didn't know what to expect (i'm picking up the bold 9700 next week). having the vibrate go out on any phone is a major woe.

Never had a problem with a blackberry doing that just HTC phones really but the CLIQ may end up using something similar to the HTC product line & I know when I talk to much on it that it ends up having problems.

Most 3G handsets get pretty warm.

As for the vibrate issue did you try toggling the side Vibrate/Loud Button on the Cliq? (It is on the left top side of the Cliq).

My TP2 doesn't seem to get warm, unless I'm charging the battery.

yeah, i tried. it was definitely defective. he even downloaded the ring toggle app.
we returned it and then went to the store and picked up a new one. it's completely different. for example:
the cliq vibrates when it's powered on, my brother's didn't
the cliq vibrates when one holds down on a widget, my brother's didn't
the cliq vibrates when the silent switch is put in the down position, my brother's didn't

thanks to everyone for your help. it's been a crazy weekend, trying to figure out if my brother's phone was indeed defective (it's our first time using android, so we didn't know if android had some other smart way of putting the phone into vibrate), trying to find a ups open late enough for us to ship/obtain a tracking number (luckily, staples has a ups inside), and driving to the store the following day to get a new exchange. phew!

i'm headed to the store tomorrow to get a blackberry 9700. with all the negative hardware issues i've been reading about it, i hope i'm not in for another journey!

Great that your problem was solved! I had some problems with my first Cliq as well (Power button not working).

What negative hardware issues?

What negative hardware issues?
i heard that the trackpad is slightly leaning to the left, some of the chrome and the area with "t-mobile" written on it either clicks or shifts.

All the reviews I've read say that it has great build quality. I guess I will find out tomorrow when I recieve my Bold 9700.

Actually I know what the problem is it comes from the Qualcomm MSM7100, 7200 & 7500 series boards. Theres a sensor within the phone that tells vibrate to work but doesnt work when it starts to overheat. In time it will stop working completely. I've opened up a phone that uses one of the boards in which vibrate also stopped working. Found out vibrate works when its apart n the sensor isnt activated till the silver piece matches up to its component. Once I put it together it stopped working & opened it up again & it worked. Those processors attached to the boards are defective & they really need to find a fix. Carriers know about it in which the techs do & do run tests on it to find the source of the overheating which will make the vibrate work again. Within the last few months I had to throw away a phone that used the MSM7500 board. It affects 400, 528 & possibly 624 mhz chip boards.
