New to G1 : Needs help !!! =/

I recently bought a blackberry curve 8520, and didn't like it to much due to there not being as much apps as I'd like it to have.  I'm in the process of trading my blackberry curve for a G1.  Some may think this was a stupid decision by me but i don't care, i love the fact that with G1 there's more apps and its more customizable.  --My question is am I able to upgrade and/or root the G1 that I'm going to get even though i didn't buy it through T-Mobile? I WOULD GLADLY appreciate the help of you G1 experts out there because I am clueless about all of this rooting tethering etc..lol !! =]

You can root any G1 know matter who you bought it from. O and android smacks blackberry around in every way. besides the email.

yeah but it works and then it doent work. and it also bricks your phone sometimes.+

Matt- i 1-click rooted but that was on cupcake before the security patch. It wont work now
