Just as a heads up... if you add your google number to your favs all calls outbound dialing through the google voice app will actually be forwarded through some other number.  Inbound calls show up as the originators number in your invoice.

It is, but I think it still uses your minutes...I think. Now if called using your house phone (without minutes), then it would be totally free.

And yes, I got mine too!

I've been playing with it for the longest time.

Yeah I had been operating under the assumption that the "official" google voice app dialed out bound through your GV number and I thought that since I had my google number as one of my favs that it wouldn't go against my minutes.  But that is not how it works.  Inbound calls to my GV number show up as any normal call to your handset.
I can dial my GV number and then have it redirect me to another however and not affect my minutes(I think).

So be sure to check your invoice to see if your minutes are increasing...

hey can someone clear this up a little? maybe make a faq or something since it is kinda android related being google and all... i just got invited to try it, but i'm not sure what it does exactly. i mean will i be dialing out from my g1 and using a different phone number? that is free minutes? if so why would i ever use my regular number anymore (aside from people already knowing it, but i could probably just start telling people my google voice number)... not sure i get it. thanks!

The proper use for Google Voice is to give you a new phone number for life.  Google gives you a number that you give out to everyone.  That way if you ever get a new cell or home phone number you don't have to give it out, you just update your Google Voice account.  For incoming calls to your Google Voice number, the number can be routed to your home, work or mobile phone depending on who is calling and what rules you have setup.  When you call out, you call through a proxy number so that instead of your cell phone or home phone number showing up on the caller ID of the person your calling, the person will see your Google Voice number.  It also centralizes your voicemail into an interface similar to GMail where you can read or listen to voicemails.  It can also route ingoing and outgoing SMS messages.  It doesn't get rid of the need for a mobile plan, it just helps route your phone calls better through a phone number that you should always have.

That is how it works if you use it to it's full extent.  Some people (like me) use it just for Voicemail for our current number as it provides a very nice Visual Voicemail system with text transcriptions of the messages.

Also, if anyone needs a Google Voice invite, let me know.  I just got 7 of them this morning.

If you live in Hawaii or Alaska, Google Voice outgoing calls cost 2 cents a minute to the mainland U.S.  Ill be patient and wait for Google to support us here in Hawaii.

I wanted an invite myself and heard that they were going out randomly.  I signed up for invites with 8 e-mail addresses and got all of the invites within 1 hour.  Unfortunately, they are gone now.

It still makes a call ... though the app from  Evan dials your GV number and then does all the extra steps for you... you just have to wait for it.

I have my GV number set up as one of my favs so outbound calls through Evan's app are free for me.  I am not sure how/if it uses data because I checked my invoice and I see outbound calls to my GV number for x num of minutes.

On another note. I signed up mostly to get the low international rates. So when I got my invite I tried to call Germany and got a fantastic clear connection, much better than what I got with the Skype app on the G1. This is a clear winner for me.  :D
