this question is not  for cellphone "collectors" that get all the colors and models that ever come out.

i am really confused by all the hype surrounding this phone so there must be something i don't know.

i dont see anything "better" about the mytouch over the g1.  i know that some ppl are an the ultimate "thinnest phone" quest, but since the soft keyboard is a joke, why would you want the mytouch?

same screen size.  same awful camera.  and the g1 prices are going down, so why choose mytouch?   cuz you want a personalized color theme?  is this marketed to sidekick users who dont want a keyboard anymore?  why not wait for the touchpro?

to make an analogy.  going from a g1 to a mytouch is like going from a sidekick 3 to a sidekick ID.

i really don't get it and despite all the campaigning, i dont see how this thing isn't going to totally bomb!

i dont think there will be a android phone "vastly superior" to the g1 until at least december... and that's how long i will wait before i hand over dollars.

Personally I'm getting the TP2 when it comes out.  With that said I thought I would put in my opinion.  I considered the MyTouch but since it doesn't have a keyboard and what I consider a work around for business email, it was out of the running.

The reason I did not consider the G1 is mostly because of the battery life.  I'm not willing to charge a phone 2-3 times a day.  I have been using a MDA (until it died a couple of weeks ago) and I could go 2 days most of the time even with the bluetooth running.  If I turned the BT off I could get and extra day out of the battery.  The G1 just didn't have the battery life I was looking for.  Currently there is no census on the battery life of the MyTouch, but the specs look better then the G1 in that dept.

I also didn't care for the looks of the G1. I don't mind the looks of the MyTouch.

My $0.02

I don't have a G1, thought it was ugly as sin(unless you remember old episodes of saved by the bell with fondness, remember that phone the main character used to carry around, yikes!).  I have used several of the MT3G demo phones and the touch screen works great. The form factor is awesome and I think this phone really appeals to new smart phone users( It's not just for business execs anymore).  In all I think this could be the common consumer's answer to "my phone's really cool and does all sorts of cool stuff and looks really cool and I'm sick of everything being iThis and iThat". ;)

I would get it for...

More ram
More rom
Weighs less
Is thinner
Looks sexy
Larger screen
Large trackball(that lights up)

but I'm sticking with my G1 for now. You can install different vk's if you don't like the stock one.(Same with G1)

Ok well the g1 just didnt have the sex appeal. Sorry. Dont get me wrong i was drooling to get my hands on android and i think its light years ahead of anything the i people are playing around with, as far as multi app use and being able to send sms alone, i will always give the iphone credit for the Polished ui. But the g1 was so freaking big and cluncky in my hands, i wanted to like it but i couldnt bring myself to renew my contract and fork over the money for a phone that i personally would hide when i pulled it out in front of other people. The MT3G has a slick form factor is slimmer and fits in my jeans fith pocket. Some people are really bent over the missing keyboard but are also saying the the iphone 3g is cheapeir, i dont know. For me its about having a really good phone that also looks nice and im sorry but the MT3G has a bit more wow factor in the looks dept than the g1. I will say i have been shocked at how many people went with the g1. I mean i walk around and see average people playing with smart phones that would not have looked at one 2-3 years ago. The MT3g is going to be a success because here for the first time ive ever seen is a smart phone that can be customized on the software level as well as hardware. Imagine all the geeks out there (myself included) with their smartphones that have Dr. Who logos or Star Wars backplates its a geeks dream. At least i think so

I'm getting one because I was unhappy with the g1... I had it for only a week, then I returned it. It was too big, to clunky, battery life was wack,  the keyboard was average at best, and overall, the build quality was poor IMO. The myTouch is slim, sleek, has more ROM for apps, feels sturdy in the hand, and has improved battery life.

I looked into getting a Hero, but see no point in paying well over $500 for a phone, when it wont even have T-Mo USA 3G. I don't need a hardware keyboard, nor do I want a smaller screen, that rules out the Moto Morrison. And IF (big if imo) the Samsung Galaxy comes to t-mo usa, it wont be for at least three months, and I don't see a point in waiting 3 or more months just for a 3.5mm headphone jack... I had a pearl that has the jack, and never used it once: I carry an ipod with me at all times.

the pearl had a micro jack if i recall not a full headphone jack.
My ipod has busted and i must say i would rather have my phone + Mp3 player in one however the G1 fails when it comes to battery life with an audio player.

Ok, I think my narrow minded self was assuming that anyone getting the mytouch already owned the g1, but it looks like 90% of you do not. I assumed that if you didn't aleady own the g1 then you were just not interested in android and gmail/gchat does not consume most of your cyber existence.

I just want to advise all you first-time-androiders/my-touch-wanters to REALLY play around with the onscreen keyboard a lot in the store. I could never imagine having a phone that didn't have a real keyboard. I email and text too much. I'm writing THIS from my g1.

Since you guys have waited this long, I would say wait for the touchpro

I cant not wait till the touch pro2 comes out. I broke my screen on the g1 a month ago and cost way too much to fix. The MyTouch is not enough of an upgrade from the G1. Seems like the same phone with no keyboard and different colors. Plus I do believe that this is marketed to the sidekick community since there wont be another.

Got the G1 on preorder the first day it came out and have loved every min of it, except its looks. I preordered the mytouch mainly cause of the looks, 9 times out of 10 I just rotate my phone and use the onscreen keyboard like I'm using now. Very responsive try using it you'll fall in love wih the automatic word detection so in my opinion its quicker than the standard keyboard of the G1. And these people that are complaining about not being able to type while driving STOP TEXTING WHILE DRIVING IT CAUSES ACCIDENTS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! The mytouch imo is way better than the samsung coming out also cause it has no track ball. So imho there is no phone worth waiting on, including touchpro, cause onscreen keyboards are the way of the future. Ordered the mytouch the first day and cant wait to get it.

Ive had an onscreen keyboard in the last 3 phones ive owned. it really isnt a big deal in my opinion. Besides i have played with it in store and i really like it. A hardware keyboard for me just makes the phone to thick or uses precious space that could be applied towards a bigger screen. But thats just my .02

For people with big hands, on screen keyboards are nothing but a pain.

(yes this phone is overrated, yes this phone should have more ram, but this phone still rocks)this is the same fight people been having when the G1 came out then every had the phone in there hand and started praising it. Some liked it some didn't...people are never satisfied either buy the phone or don't but to stay on topic i will get the phone because it works for me i'd rather buy the phone until a better phone come out then not have some android in my phone your swear this is a horrible phone i played with it took it home and love it!!!

It is a lot sexier then the G1-Looks are important.
The more plastic, the less appeal.

Glassy looking phones like the Touch diamond have the look.
The G1 is ugly cousin of the sidekick (looks wise)

I think the launching of this device is way off base, because of the TP2.
But for 200 bucks the Mytouch is a great addition to the line up.
Why wouldnt people want one? Give it to the wife or teen !

Personally, I don't see the huge buzz about this phone. As far as I have looked into it, it doesn't do anything that the G1 can't(anyone feel free to correct me if I'm wrong). Since the MT3G's release, I always thought it was a bad idea that they released the MT3G with the TP2 having it's own release just a couple months away. If anything, I'd say T-Mo should somehow grab the Pre. Other than the TP2, they're not anywhere near impressing me with any releases, present or upcoming.
