I really don't get the excitement for the Galaxy S III, unless it's going to be exactly the same as the international version. Samsung's international phones have ended up alright, but every time they come over to the U.S., they end up screwed in some way.

Upcoming Phones / Re: Phones ready to be upgraded, need HELP!

The Galaxy Nexus is the best you can do on T-Mobile, and on Android overall. Google actually cares about the Nexus devices, since they only release one a year. Because of this, the Nexus devices get timely updates and Android is tweaked to run better on the Nexus devices. Compare this to Samsung/HTC/Motorola who vomit out Android devices at the rate of twice a week and it's a crapshoot to whether or not your device will get an update. Or even when the update comes, it might make the device worse (a bunch of HTC phones and 2.3 were like this.) You might not care about OS updates themselves, but OS updates means new APIs and you can get a better app with a new OS update. You don't have to worry about finicky dev communities which have become very fragmented as of late. Once reliable manufacturers aren't so anymore. HTC devices were known for dev support which is why I bought a MyTouch 3G Slide over the Galaxy S. But that dev support has faded. There hasn't been an official version of CyanogenMod for the Sensation and it's been 9 months since it released.

If you can't afford the $600 for an unlocked Galaxy Nexus, buy a Nexus S. They're about $250 right now and run ICS perfectly.

Eh, I'd rather take not having to screw around with my phone for updates than the latest and greatest SoC. Dev communities are practically a coin flip these days. For instance, the Sensation one is awful. No official CyanogenMod despite being out for 8 months. I know people moving from Sensations/Evo 3Ds to Nexus Ses because they'll take fully-functional ICS over better hardware.

The Flyer's currently at your local Best Buy in a Wi-Fi version and in a Sprint version at your local Sprint store.

myTouch Slide / Re: Memory Issue on MyTouch Slide
« on: June 23, 2011, 05:01:02 am »
Check if you have large SMS threads. If so, download SMS Backup+ from the Market to back up all your threads into Gmail and then delete the threads after they're backed up. Otherwise, browser windows can also take up memory under 2.2 or a large cache under the Browser (check in Manage Applications) could also be a problem.

The Slide has a bad memory problem. HTC didn't put anything into /data where your apps go, and I tried as hard as I could before I had to format my SD card to put an EXT4 partition for apps2sd. That obviously requires root.

Does this phone support WMV?

RockPlayer should support WMV for videos.

G2x / Re: When is it safe to buy this phone?
« on: June 17, 2011, 03:06:13 pm »
Get the Sensation. There's a reason why you can't buy the G2x right now. You probably won't be able to buy it in a store until the Gingerbread update comes out.

I'm pretty sure this is fake, since no reputable news outlet has reported this. Pie in the sky.

Sense 3.0 isn't that bad. I don't really have a need to go back to CM7 running a Sense 3.0 ROM, other than me wanting to go back because it just feels weird for me to use anything other than stock Android.

The Circus (lounge) / Re: AT&T = Fastest mobile broadband network?
« on: May 27, 2011, 08:19:47 pm »
From what I've seen, it's LTE way ahead of everything else. T-Mobile's HSPA+ is equal to WiMax in a good market. AT&T's HSPA+ is okay, but still worse than T-Mobile's in a good market.

Espresso on the Slide was baaaad. However, I did try it out on the MT4G with the MT4GS build (what a name) and I couldn't really complain about it. Nothing outlandishly broken in it.

My only complaints are that notification bar and the broken search button.

What's not good yet?

HTC's been pretty good on updates, but a locked and signed bootloader generally means no custom ROMs. This means either you can't get rid of a crummy stock ROM (MyTouch 4G) or you might not be able to get support after the manufacturer abandons the device.

Surprise, surprise: the Sensation's bootloader is locked down

Sense 3.0 really isn't bad, but this still isn't good.

I have the Vibrant, and do like it, and there were alot of complaints about slow updates but it looks like Samsung may have learned from that backlash.

And people said that said Samsung might have learned from "the worst Android phone ever made", the Samsung Moment or the Behold II and all of Samsung's other devices.

The Sensation or the G2x will be your best choices. The Sensation with Sense is alright if you just want to use your phone without having to tweak it or anything. So is the G2x. The G2x is a bit buggy right now, but it'll probably be resolved very shortly here with the Gingerbread update.

Don't touch anything Samsung makes with a 10-foot pole. People say Samsung should be given yet another chance with the Galaxy S2, but that's what they said about the Galaxy S and look at the litany of problems with that phone (broken GPS, noticeable lag, wonky audio chip and piss-poor support.)

Go into the store when the Sensation comes out and compare it to the G2x. Sense might or not be your cup of tea, same with stock Android. Also, the 4.3'' display might not be for you on the Sensation.

Phone face-off / Re: G2x vs HTC Sensation
« on: May 04, 2011, 07:47:23 pm »
If you want CyanogenMod, get a G2x. A lot of the CM guys own one including Cyanogen himself. Also, HTC has been locking down their devices as of late. The Thunderbolt only got cracked because there was access to an engineering bootloader and it looks bleak for the Incredible S/Desire S.

Does this mean they didnt sell many of em?

Probably.

Looking at how Microsoft has treated WP7 so far, Mango will probably come early next year. The best in terms of hardware might be second-gen Snapdragons coming in the unforeseeable future. The platform's future doesn't feel very certain, even with Microsoft throwing money at Nokia to use WP7.

You'd probably be better off waiting another month if possible for the G2x's issues to be resolved. Android's a decent enough smartphone OS for daily usage and there's third-party development on it.

I wouldn't say that the SK4G has old tech. It has the same 1 GHz Hummingbird as in the Galaxy S, with a smaller 3.5'' screen. It's technically solid, but you want the best at the time. Time might not catch up to this generation of devices as it did to the ones from two years ago, but look at the G1 and iPhone 3G now.

I'd much rather get the G2x. It seems to have a solid build, and Tegra 2 from the sounds of it makes Android very smooth, on par with iOS. The 4'' screen is nice and spacious too. It's not too big like the 4.3'' phones, but you can type comfortably on it. You don't need a keyboard, unless you do SSH which you probably don't. The soft keyboard in Gingerbread is good for everyday usage, and you can even download that keyboard from the Market for phones on 2.2. It'll last you 2 years for sure, whereas it's a bit of tossup on the SK4G.

If you're set with a hardware keyboard, I'd rather go with the G2. The G2 will have a lot better build and is on par with internals. Plus it'll actually get updates. If you really, really want the Sidekick, make sure you're happy with it in-store because it's very likely that it won't see an update.

T-Mobile Services / Re: which smartphone does not need data plan?
« on: April 12, 2011, 08:33:40 pm »
If you want to avoid a data plan, get a phone that isn't from T-Mobile. A good Symbian cameraphone would work (N95, N86, N79) but I would rather get an unlocked iPhone 3GS. The 3GS is still very capable and it's a modern smartphone, not a phone with a camera grafted on.

Upcoming Phones / Re: Buy G2x or wait for Pyramid possibly?
« on: April 12, 2011, 08:31:06 pm »
There is demand for a kick ass 4" phone with a 5 row slide out keyboard but it seems that OEM's are stepping away from this form factor. From T-Mobile subscriber's perspective it's already hard to get a high end phone, asking for a high end phone with a physical keyboard seems impossible to come true.

Keyboards really aren't needed anymore. The only real reason to need a keyboard is if you do SSH often. This is coming from a former hardware keyboard fanatic on old BlackBerrys. People like keyboards, but they'll deal without them. I like hardware keyboards, but there's too many compromises these days to be made. Portrait is the best, but you're dealing with an awkward slider or small screen. I was never a fan of landscape, but even then, you're adding at least a good 20-30g to the phone which is noticeable.

I would go for the G2x. 4'' is probably the perfect screen size. Bootloader is open on the G2x, and it's going to be a pain for any sort of aftermarket efforts on the Sensation, especially since a lot of the CM guys including Cyanogen himself are getting the G2x.
