G1 Discussion / Re: Rooting your phone blocks some paid apps
« on: February 24, 2009, 11:34:10 pm »
Although Google did make this phone for development purposes, they never once said it should not be used as your daily phone and never said or implied people with the dev G1 would not get access to the same features as other G1 users.  Hell, they even gave them to their own employees as a Christmas bonus.  All they've done with this change is anger a ton of developers (and users who put the ADP1 software on their stock G1) and not even eliminate the hacking problem they were trying to.
"Note that Android Dev Phone 1 devices are not intended for non-developer end users. Since the devices can be configured with system software not provided by or supported by Google or any other company, end users operate these devices at their own risk." - Source

They may have more warnings elsewhere but that is on the first page that you get to when you try to purchase a Developer model.

Most of the time you can restore the phone to the original firmware if you need to send it in for warranty coverage.  If you were to "brick" your phone so that it wasn't running any firmware I'm guessing that your warranty would be voided and I don't know what options you have.

Personally I don't see that Google is making mistakes.  In my opinion Google is doing what's necessary to create a successful product and people's expectations don't match up to what they should have.  Google released a developers phone for development purposes.  That particular version of the device was meant for development companies to be able to test their software without signing a contract with T-mobile.  It wasn't meant for anything else.  If people bought the phone for everyday use then they can do most things that a standard phone can but they shouldn't expect anymore.  In order to make the market successful, Google had to implement some type of protection.  If they did it completely open there would be problems with security and piracy.  They chose this method to protect companies software from being pirated.  Without any form of protection, big software companies would never take them seriously.

You all say that the iPhone is better.  The Android platform may not be 100% open but it is far more open than that on the iPhone.  They have to approve each individual application before if appears in the market.  They have a very protected market as well.  They may have more applications right now but ultimately what those applications are capable of doing is limited and the app store has been around for a couple of years now.  Just wait a bit longer and everything will be fixed.  Just remember that for the first year that the iPhone was out, there were NO 3rd Party applications.  People had to wait a full year to get applications of any sort and then longer to get the applications that they have right now.

My G1 has gotten better with each release.  I'm getting happier and happier with each release and update.

I ended up installing Edisso and really like it.  It keeps alot of the original theme in tact and just changes a few minor things that I think make it look just a bit better.  I'm really looking forward to seeing how Aero turns out though.

G1 User Reviews/Feedback/ / Re: I'm sorry to say it but...

Having used both phones extensively, I will say that I still prefer the G1 over the iPhone for a few reasons.  The iPhone may have some better transitions and such but falls short in many other areas.  First off, I wasn't looking for a media player and even if I was, the iPhone wouldn't have been my first choice.  The worst MP3 player that I've ever owned was an iPod, the best was a Zune.  As a communication device, the iPhone falls way short.  The touchscreen keyboard is very difficult to use.  Even people who tell me they got used to it haven't.  The autocorrect is sometimes good but sometimes it isn't.  I am a member of a student marketing organization called DEX.  One day, a friend of mine in the organization sent an e-mail to our 70 year old adviser saying "When can we meet up for SEX?"  The iPhone autocorrected his statement because it was smarter than him.  With a real keyboard, I don't have that problem.  I hit the key that I know I want and it doesn't change it on me.  Second, the fact that you still can't send MMS is a joke.  You can't always send everything as an e-mail.  My previous phone was a Nokia 5300 and it struggled when you sent an e-mail to MMS on it.  Third, background running apps are great.  On the iPhone if something doesn't work well then you're out of luck.  You can't have something running in the back to fix it.  On Android you can.  Something as small as Missed Call or Shake Awake that makes using the phone just a bit better to use.

I did finally get it working.  It does stream the audio which is pretty lame.  I wish that it would save the songs to your device.  The biggest problem is that you're not always somewhere where you have data access.  I was out in the middle of no-where yesterday visiting family and couldn't play.  You also couldn't use this on a flight since it requires the data connection.  The song quality is pretty good and the game play is good on easy and medium, on hard it was really jumpy.  The only other problem that I ran into is that the game isn't multitouch (even on a rooted device) yet sometimes it has you press 2 colors at the same time.  If you don't release the 1 before you try the 2nd one then it doesn't work.

I rooted my phone this morning and was able to install and use both Shazam and POIs Search without any problems.

G1 Discussion / Any good themes?
« on: February 23, 2009, 01:57:50 pm »
I finally got around to rooting my phone this morning and would like to put a nice theme on it.  I looked around over at XDA but didn't find anything that I really liked that was released.  A lot of the really nice looking ones say they aren't releasing until mid-March until after the contest is done.  Does anyone have links to any themes that are released for RC33 that you're liking?

I had the same problem.  The funny thing is that I put in an old GMail address that I had along with it's password.  It tried for a second and then came back to a new login box that said invalid password and had my hosted account e-mail address as the username and it wasn't editable.  I then added the password for my hosted account and it works.  It was kind of buggy to get there though.

I downloaded the game.  One of the first things they do is ask you to enter a Nickname.  They won't let you use the physical keyboard, you have to use their crappy on screen one.  I've entered like 15 nicknames and they all say Invalid Nickname.  Guess I can't even try the game out.

I'll pay for an office app that lets me edit the documents as well.  Until that comes no thank you.  It would be nice if if would view Powerpoint presentations as well.

You sure your battery isn't dying?  When my battery dies my phone turns off and won't turn back on until I charge it.

33
A lot of the simple apps that are currently available will remain Free.  Just because people can charge for apps it doesn't mean that they have to.  The developer gets to decide if the app is free or paid for.  Some of the apps that are free right now I'm sure will switch to pay apps but mostly we'll see newer, larger applications.

I don't think that I'd pay $10.  Really, it doesn't do $120/year more than Google Maps.  I can already get turn by turn directions, just not with 3D maps and voice control.  I'll give it a try but it's not going to be $120/year good...especially when I can go get a GPS for $100.

I'm hoping that they've optimized a lot of the older code to take up less space and run smoother in addition to adding more apps and features.  If they did then we shouldn't have a problem.

I want it now.  All of my friends with Blackberry's updated Google Maps today and told me to hop on.  Unfortunately I haven't gotten the update yet.

I honestly don't think that there is a spot for one.  Sometimes they have generic accessories that they list on every phone whether they work on the phone or not.

As far as I know you can't turn off your phone service but as long as you're connected to WiFi it will be used for the browser.

The T-Mobile branded Linksys router is a really good one.  Linksys is a great brand and it's a great device.  It doesn't offer N speeds but unless you have a laptop or other device that can use N then it's not worth it to upgrade.
