T-Mobile Services / Re: time frame on 1900MHz refarming?
« on: December 22, 2012, 08:24:16 pm »
This is probably an impossible question to answer, but do you have any guess on a time frame for when they might turn up the power for WCDMA? Six months? A year? Who knows maybe never?

I was thinking of taking advantage of the refarm to get a phone that only has PCS and not AWS.

It'll be more smart to have a phone that has both AWS and PCS HSPA+. I have a feeling Tmo wont turn up the power anytime soon. I guess wait for LTE over AWS sometime in 2013.

You know what's weird Viper. Seattle and its surrounding cities got HSPA+ over 1900 a couple of weeks ago, but its still possible to drop down to 2G/EDGE. My friends iPhone 4S was doing that sometimes. So is the 1900 HSPA+ running at lower power compared to 1900 2G? What's your take on it?

If your city is not fully announced yet, then don't worry about its current issues right now. It can be anything causing that weird issue. Where do you live again?

24
You answered your own question. Yes, 1900 has a stronger signal/better penetration than AWS, as you seen when your phone switches to EDGE. So when you're in a HSPA+ AWS & PCS area, your phone will select PCS most likely until its unavailable.

Now, with the band forcing, it depends on the phone. Ask at XDA-Developers in the Nexus 4 section. They will help you out.

You will not be forced to sign a 2 year since you already have a phone to use. But you can always call them to double check, and tell them you already have a compatible phone.

« on: October 03, 2012, 03:29:53 pm »
Thanks for the extremely detailed replies J-Hop2o6 and Viper Matrix Wireless. I think I mostly understood everything.

A couple points for clarification:

1) When I was asking if coverage for 1900 Mhz HSPA+ would be just as good as AWS, when the refarm is done, I meant in terms of geographical area covered (numbers of towers, I suppose?), not technically how good is the building penetration (although that's a nice plus to know about). Will I get coverage in all the same places that I might go with my AWS phone right now, with a phone that does HSPA+ on 1900 Mhz?

2) Is there a way if I can tell right now if I'm getting HSPA+ on 1900 Mhz, without have a 1900 Mhz HSPA+ phone (I have a Nexus One)?

3) Viper when you say that it would be best to get a phone that has the 850/1900 bands, are you saying that this will be preferable to a phone with AWS HSPA+? That is, if it's a choice between one or the other, since there are very few phones that have both.

4) Eventually will this mean that AT&T phones are completely compatible with T-Mobile's network both on HSPA+ and LTE (using AWS)? They would work just as well as a T-Mobile phone?

Thanks again for all the details and explanation above.

1.) You can guarantee that. But remember, Tmo has to go to each site/tower and "upgrade/refarm" it. So you just gotta have patience for your area to have comparable AWS HSPA+ coverage. But where ever you have AWS HSPA+, you will have 1900 HSPA+. Its just a matter of when/how long. And i'm sure Tmo will eventually fully convert HSPA+ over 1900 from AWS and shut down 2G/EDGE. So 1900 will be exclusivity HSPA+ and LTE will be exclusively AWS. Should start atleast 2014-15

2.) It might be tricky. I believe Samsung Android phones with TouchWiz has a deep menu where you can select which bands to test. I'm able to do it on my Galaxy Nexus but its not the prettiest way. PM me if you want more info to test it out. But a much easier way I recommend is buy a cheap unlocked iPhone 3G/3GS and put in your Tmo sim card and start testing. Should find some around $50 unlocked.

4.) More phones these days has support for both AT&T and Tmo. And looks like AT&T LTE phones will always be atleast dual-band (700 / 1700) which will work with Tmo's 1700 spectrum. And since Tmo is converting to 1900 HSPA+, Tmo is covered on that end automatically. Just gotta give them time to "upgrade/refarm" all those AWS HSPA+ towers (and EDGE only towers maybe).

Well that & I think a bunch of people left the carrier completely and onto somewhere else sadly.

I do have a question tho. Why does the Samsung Galaxy Note II have AT&T LTE Roaming?

Yea I miss the old small little community we had here for a couple of years =(  .. What have you been up to?
But yea, I have no clue. I guess its more of not having alot of different variants. Easier to have the whole package. Plus Samsung has more say and cant be pushed around by the US Cartel Carriers as before. That's my guess. I'm not complaining atleast.

The 20MHz in the chart below will come after the initialization of Phase 1. Nothing much really. Trying to get alot of rest.

Oh ok. Hopefully you feel/get better. And what chart below?

Glad to see you're still around Viper. I mainly come here to update the Upcoming Phones thread, which helps me out remembering what phones are coming out. But damn it is dead here. Wonder where everyone went? T-Mobile.com forums? lol

1.) Turn off your 3G/HSPA+, and you will get EDGE, which uses 1900 band. That should give you a good indiaction. But generally yes, HSPA+ over 1900 will have better building penetration than AWS.

2.) AWS HSPA+ shouldn't be affected coverage wise even. Bandwidth wise i'm unsure right now since Tmo WILL be adding LTE over AWS. Tmo currently uses (depending on location) 10x10(20MHz) for DC-HSPA+ (42 mbps) and 5x5(10MHz) for HSPA+ (21 mbps). If Tmo has enough spectrum in a market like my city Seattle (no less than 40MHz), Tmo will use 10x10(20MHz) DC-HSPA+ AND 10x10(20MHz) LTE. But I believe Tmo will start LTE at 5x5 in most markets initially. More details should come soon.

3.) Maybe. Tmo will have to COMPLETELY shut down their GSM/2G network so they can fully use 1900 for DC-HSPA+. That'll give them some breathing room for LTE over AWS since Tmo can shrink HSPA+ over AWS and not be penalized for it, and increase LTE over AWS in areas that were limited to only 5x5(10MHz). Remember, Tmo has an average of 20MHz of AWS in alot of markets. Some more than 20MHz.

Hope that helps you out a bit.

Upcoming Phones / Re: New Google Nexus phone rumors?
« on: August 08, 2012, 12:11:42 pm »
Thanks J-Hop.  I hope the announcement of the next line of phones hits sooner than later.  My Vibrant is tired, I like pure Google, and don't want to "settle" for 2011 specs (even though it's still an upgrade to my current phone).

If I had any say in it, I'd prefer a <4.5" Samsung phone for the next Nexus.  But I'm sure I'll be on board with whatever they come out with - provided it isn't one of those 5"+ phablets.  Too big for me.

Or you can get the G-Nexus now (like I will in a couple of days since its only $350 in the Play Store), then once the new Nexus(s) come out you can either 1.) sell it immediately, which will make the new Nexus cheaper at the time (since it will be $500+ at launch). 2.) Cherish the G-Nexus until the new Nexus drops in price then either sell or keep the Galaxy Nexus.

Remember, G-Nexus is great as is now with JB, plus its a great non-contract price.

Upcoming Phones / Re: New Google Nexus phone rumors?

Nothing so far. Only the 5 DEVICES rumor. Take note there has been TWO so far (Nexus 7" & Nexus Q), and the rumor of a Nexus 10", so that makes THREE Nexus DEVICES so far. I have a feeling it'll be two Nexus phones in a few months (4-4.3" & a 4.5-4.8" -- either made by Samsung and/or HTC).

iPhone is trying to become more like Android. But yes, looks like it'll be a 16:9/10 screen (aka longer) now. Better than that outdated SDTV (4:3) ratio they had before.
