http://www.tmonews.com/2011/02/t-mobile-reports-fourth-quarter-2010-results/

BELLEVUE, Wash., February 25, 2011 — T-Mobile USA, Inc. (“T-Mobile USA”) today reported fourth quarter of 2010 results.  In the fourth quarter of 2010, T-Mobile USA reported service revenues of $4.69 billion compared to $4.65 billion in the fourth quarter of 2009, and OIBDA of $1.34 billion compared to $1.38 billion reported in the fourth quarter of 2009.  The number of customers using smartphones continued to increase significantly during the quarter, driving growth in blended data ARPU.  Blended data ARPU in the fourth quarter of 2010 was $12.80, up 25.5% from the fourth quarter of 2009.  Net customer losses were 23,000 in the fourth quarter of 2010 compared to 371,000 net customer additions in the fourth quarter of 2009.

In the fourth quarter of 2010, net customer losses were 23,000, compared to net additions of 137,000 in the third quarter of 2010 and 371,000 in the fourth quarter of 2009.

Blended churn, including both contract and prepaid customers, was 3.6% in the fourth quarter of 2010, up from 3.4% in the third quarter of 2010 and 3.3% in the fourth quarter of 2009.

--- Seems like Tmo can't catch a break.. they haven't grown in awhiiile.. same 33M customers and similar Net revenue, etc.. and what EXACTLY is churn in simpler terms? ppl ending their contracts/accounts before it expired?

But the only savior (sadly) is the iPhone 5.. they HAVE to land that simple phone this summer, or they'll just keep loosing out.. plus be more aggressive with more 3G coverage.. it doesn't even have to have HSPA+.. atleast HSPA.. but thank God I live in a city (Seattle) with HSPA+ coverage everywhere.. so I have no problem with Tmo.

http://www.engadget.com/2011/02/16/lightsquared-says-it-has-signed-up-five-companies-for-its-wholes/

LightSquared has faced something of an uphill battle in getting its wholesale 4G LTE network off the ground -- even including accusations that it's a threat to national security -- but it looks like it's having fairly good luck attracting some customers. According to Chief Marketing Officer Frank Boulben, LightSquared has signed agreements with five companies so far, including two carriers, one website, a national retailer, and a device manufacturer -- none of which it's able to name, of course. Boulben also revealed that the company, which plans to compete with the likes of Verizon, AT&T and Clearwire, is finished raising money for the "short term," and that it plans to begin trials later this year in Las Vegas, Baltimore, Denver and Phoenix once it finishes its lab testing in Dallas.

-- Two carrier signed on.. Lightsquare is competing with Verizon, AT&T, and Clear.. I don't see Tmo on there.. Could Tmo possibly be one of the two carriers? I wonder who the other one is.. Sprint? Yes I know they have Clear, but Clear has bad spectrum.. Plus Lightsquare also has satellite spectrum meaning 4G/LTE everywhere outside in the US.

Note: It is using SGX540 GPU (eg. SGS/Hummingbird GPU), but an updated driver of 540 (1.5 to 1.6).. and other parts (like dual memory controller) that makes the phone faster.. But overall, OMAP4 is a good SoC.. Don't mind the Moto Atrix (nor iPhone 4) since it's higher than WVGA.. meaning that they both have to render images at a higher screen resolution (eg. process more lines).

Upcoming Phones / HTC Flyer (7" tablet) coming to Tmo?
« on: February 15, 2011, 03:32:49 am »
http://www.engadget.com/2011/02/15/htc-launches-into-tablet-wars-with-1-5ghz-7-inch-flyer/

It has WCDMA 900/AWS/2100.. aka Tmo 3G/HSPA+

Boy oh boy, HTC is entering the tablet arena with quite a bang. The company has just taken the wraps off its brand new 7-inch Flyer Android tablet, which touts a 1.5GHz single-core CPU, 1GB of RAM plus 32GB of flash storage, an aluminum unibody construction, 1024 x 600 resolution, a tablet-optimized version of Sense, and... what's this, a pressure-sensitive capacitive stylus! The HTC Scribe trademark we saw floating around in legal waters turned out not to be the branding for a tablet, it's actually the name HTC gives to the technology enabling what it calls a "groundbreaking pen experience." Other details include a 5 megapixel camera on the back paired with a 1.3 megapixel imager up front, a 4000mAh battery rated to last for four hours of continuous video playback, and memory expandability via a microSD card.

The Flyer will ship in Q2 2011 with Android Gingerbread 2.4 on board. HTC says it'll be indistinguishable from 2.3 as far the end user is concerned, though we all know it won't be quite as good as the 3.0 stuff. We're told not to worry, however, since the new version of Sense being introduced with the Flyer will be the focal point of the company's software offering. As far as HTC is concerned, Sense matters more than the underlying platform, and the reason Honeycomb isn't the shipping OS here was explicitly stated as HTC not having enough time with the latest Google code to customize it to the full requirements of Sense. Guess that settles that.

http://www.engadget.com/2011/02/11/nokia-and-microsoft-enter-strategic-alliance-on-windows-phone-b/

It's happened. Former Microsoft exec and current Nokia CEO Stephen Elop has married his future and his past in the holy matrimony of a "strategic alliance." Windows Phone is becoming Nokia's "principal smartphone strategy," but there's a lot more to this hookup -- scope out the official press release just after the break. Microsoft's Bing and adCenter will provide search and ad services across Nokia devices, while Nokia will look to innovate "on top of the platform" with things like its traditional strength in imaging. Ovi Maps will be a core part of Microsoft's mapping services and will be integrated with Bing, while Nokia's content store will be integrated into (read: assimilated by) Microsoft's Marketplace. Xbox Live and Office will also, as is to be expected, feature on these brave new Microkia handsets. An open letter on Nokia's Conversations site, penned jointly by Stephen Elop and Steve Ballmer, sets out the foregoing details along with the following statement of intent:

"There are other mobile ecosystems. We will disrupt them. There will be challenges. We will overcome them. Success requires speed. We will be swift. Together, we see the opportunity, and we have the will, the resources and the drive to succeed."

So yes, there will be WP7 Nokia phones.. but Nokia will still ship Symbian devices, and develop the Meego OS.

http://www.engadget.com/2011/02/09/verizon-successfully-completes-first-volte-call-in-the-world-pl/

Verizon has just announced that it has completed the first voice over LTE (VoLTE) call on a commercial network anywhere in the world today, a 33-second dialogue between employees on LG Revolutions in the company's headquarters in Basking Ridge, New Jersey, following it up with a number of other calls where staffers were able to talk and use data services simultaneously -- thanks in no small part to the fact that LTE treats voice just as it treats any other type of data. We'd initially gotten the impression yesterday that Verizon would be starting to roll out voice over LTE (VoLTE) with the Revolution in mid-2011, but the company's press release today is saying that they'll be working to "enhance" the VoLTE experience in 2011 with commercially availability now expected next year. High-fidelity calls are expected to be part of that experience, so it'll be harder than ever to hold a call when you've got a bad cold. Remember the throat lozenges, alright? Follow the break for the full press release.

What happened with VoLGA? I thought it was closer to working compared to VoLTE?

T-mobile 3G / LTHE (Long Term HSPA Evolution) discussion
« on: December 15, 2010, 08:57:43 pm »
http://www.tmonews.com/2010/12/forget-hspa-and-lte-lthe-is-the-way-to-go/

Your thoughts...

anyways.. pls don't tell me this is an extension of WCDMA, instead of LTE's actual new air interface, E-UTRAN.. if so, Tmo is really tryna avoid LTE in the coming years.. i want them to get off of WCDMA.. the speed is nice, yes.. but its still 3G/WCDMA.. plus most website doesn't even allow more than 5mbps bandwidth.. so i rather see Tmo invest in the new tech LTE/E-UTRAN, than the next evolution of WCDMA/3G.

So hopefully LTHE uses all the new LTE tech like E-UTRAN/OFDM+MIMO/OFDMA+OFDM/SAE/Packet Switch/etc.

40
These are the SoC's Tmo will use for cell phones in 2011 to reach higher data speeds, since Tmo will upgrade their 64QAM-only HSPA+ (Rel.7, Cat.14) to DC-HSPA+ (Rel.8, Cat.24 = 42.2mbps).. after that will be Tmo upgrade HSPA+ yet again adding MIMO tech (multi. in, multi. out/smart antenna).. that will make Tmo's HSPA+ (DC-HSPA+ w/ MIMO [Rel.9, Cat.28] to be exact) theoretical speeds 84.4mbps.

Premium Snapdragon:

Single (DC-HSPA+) = 8270
Double (HSPA+, EvDo-B) = 8660
Triple (DC-HSPA+, EvDo-B, LTE/TD-LTE) = 8960

Intergrated Multi-Mode 3G/4G chipset: 8960
