Motorola Discussion / ZN5 MicroSD Capacity
« on: December 09, 2008, 12:11:49 am »
So I wanted to know what the 'real' max microSD capacity was.  I looked at a bunch of forums and saw a lot of people posting that they had tried 8GB with success, so I bought a Kingston 8GB microSDHC, class 4, card from Newegg.  Sure enough, it only recognized 4GB.  So beware if you want to go over the 4GB max.

Speaking of nonsensical rules, this phone has quite a few of them:

1) Support for 4GB microSDHC, but nothing larger
2)  No internet access for 3rd party apps
3)  No IM and E-Mail when using WiFi only.

I could go on.  I love the phone, but it seems like Moto and TMO decided to cripple this phone in order to upsell people the G1 and Behold.....

Those features are there, but disabled when the page is still loading.  Once the Stop button turns to Back, those setting are usable.

My wife is getting along just fine with it.  The camera is not any more difficult than the Canon I own.  The music play isn't great, but to create a simple playlist, shuffle your songs, view by artist, albums etc, is pretty easy.

All the documentation says it defaults to WiFi, the to EDGE, etc.  This is what works for me:

1)  Shortcuts->Quick Connect

or

Main Menu->Settings->WiFi->Available Networks then select your network

2)  Main Menu->Fun&Apps->Web Access->Browser Setup->Browser Profiles->Default Profile then select WiFi

Most apps have an setting under Options->Manage->Application Settings->Data Connections for Wifi.

I have found the IM and E-mail, listed under Main Menu, are not available through WiFi.

Motorola Discussion / Re: Compaitible video formats for Zine?

I downloaded RealMedia Producer and that is working pretty good, but it is a lot of trial and error, otherwise you get a bitrate error.  I would just be nice if they said use codec X at bitrate Y and it will work.  Oh well...

At least you are getting a message, mine plays for about half a second then stalls, one video locked it so bad I had to pull the battery.

I always love how phones say they support some video format, and then give you no details on the specifics of actually encoding a video in that format.

I even got desperate and installed the tools on the CD, not bad, quick way to enter contacts, view test message, and there is a supposed video editor that will convert videos into the correct format.  Here's the kicker...

THEY WANT $6.50 TO DOWNLOAD THE CODEC!!!!  I have Mencoder, FFMPEG and every other converter known to man, and they want money for it.  Here is the webpage;

http://www.bvrp.com/Customers/Motorola/v5/codecsV2/codecus.html

This is from the page:

"Why do I have to pay for a codec?

Many of the main audio and video file encoding technologies are protected by patents. Most are free for the ability to decode or play but require a royalty for the ability to encode or create files. "

What a load of crap.....

Okay, so I got this phone today and love it.  Works great.  WiFi is great WITHOUT the data plan.  I selected my network, entered my passphrase and was on, no issues.  I even use WPA2 w/AES for security.

The browsing is a mixed bag.  I don't think there is any way to get the browser into landscape mode.  Mobile sites are good, normal sites are okay, but there is a lot of horizontal scrolling.

^^^ WOW, that is crazy, I guess I did get very lucky.  I didn't have to use any mail-in rebates, which I never use anyway, I always have poor luck.  Thanks for the info, I probably won't even consider using them again.

Are all of these places that bad?  Has anyone used any other online sellers, like letstalk.com, and had better success?

kenomikes - Thanks, I read that article, or something very close to it, and it seems to imply it will work.  I like the fact that it can keep track of your network security keys.  I just wanted to know if anyone has actually tried it themselves.  Our offices have pretty extensive WiFi coverage and I want to use it for casual browsing, but since the EDGE signal is very weak in our buildings, I don't want to pay for data when I can't use it most of the day.

Wow, didn't know Wirefly was so bad.

About 2 months after the Pearl released, my wife and I went through Wirefly and switched from Sprint to TMO.  We got 2 Pearls for FREE and they switched both of our numbers from Sprint without any issues.

It just kills me that after 2 years, if I go back to TMO and try and get a new Pearl (still an 8100), they want to charge my $100 plus a 2 yr contract.

Wirefly may be shady, but they don't try and charge $100 for a 2 yr old phone, of course :)

Now that my plan is up, I was looking into the ZN5, but I want to know if I can browse the internet, using WiFi, WITHOUT a data plan?

Seems like the answer should be 'Of course, no problem', but I have seen other phones/plans that require a data plan or other service to use things like WiFi, GPS, etc.

Thanks,
