G1 Discussion / Re: Time of Call
« on: October 31, 2008, 07:29:39 am »
I think the issue here is that "Yesterday" or "5 Days ago" isn't accurate enough for some people. I'd also like to see some more detailed call logs. They should be like "Thursday, Oct 14th, at 3:04 PM"

Tap and hold on the number, then tap Add to Contacts.

When HTC makes a device, it's given a name by them. The ATT Tilt was called the HTC Kaiser/TyTN II, the Wing was called the HTC Herald, the MDA was called the HTC Wizard. The carriers take the device, have HTC customize the look slightly, and then give it a new name.

In the G1's case, it was called the HTC Dream. Tmobile got ahold of it and renamed it the G1, however, I think the codename was Kila, which is why a lot of things still say that. You'll also notice that under the battery it says DREA100, which is the HTC Dream branding.

G1 Tech support / Re: okay. hot phone is getting a bit annoying
« on: October 30, 2008, 08:35:03 am »
Well, considering how high up the battery is in the device, and that the chin is the part getting hot, I'd say it's probably not so much the battery.

I believe the chin is where the CPU/Power circuits lie. That would explain it heating up when doing things such as watching movies or play games, and charging the device. The CPU will heat up during CPU-intensive tasks, and the charging circuit heats up when the DC-DC converter is working.

G1 Tech support / Re: Alarm Clock stopped working
« on: October 30, 2008, 08:28:43 am »
I had this issue yesterday morning.. the alarm failed to sound. The screen lit up and the buttons on the screen for Snooze and Dismiss came up, but there was no audio coming from the speaker. It sat there for 5 minutes making no sound, and after i dismissed the alarm and then went to test the sounds, they were sounding properly. I got the RC29 update this morning, so we'll see if it happens again. Rebooting seemed to have fixed the alarm as it sounded this morning after a reboot last night.

If the real-time preview image is showing blue and you're pointing at something white, try waiting a few seconds for the white balance to calibrate. It changes white balance in real time, but it's not always very accurate about it.

You probably need to make sure you enable installing from non-market sources before you begin.

On the phone:

Home screen -> Settings -> Applications -> Unknown Sources           <--- make sure this is checked.

G1 Tech support / Re: anyone else having compass problems?
« on: October 30, 2008, 07:55:37 am »
I had that issue for a minute or two when I first got mine. Someone had suggested shaking it a little, so i did that a few times, and suddenly it started following my movements. It's been working fine from then on, so I'm thinking that it just needs to calibrate itself. Spin around a few times, move it to some different orientations and whatnot.

If you want to check it, there's an app in the market now called Orienteer that uses the digital compass to show a virtual compass on your screen. It'd probably be helpful in determining if your compass is working properly or not.

Make sure you're away from metal! The digital compass is extremely sensitive and even being inside a car will affect it.

A charger would have little effect on a new battery like the ones in our phones. Charging speed does not normally affect current drain on lithium ion batteries like the one in the device. I've had different results after running a lot of programs, and just after a reboot. It all depends on how fast the phone draws current from the battery.

Different voltages would have an adverse affect that you'd see, in that the phone would not charge. USB charging is meant to pull 5 volts from the pc/wall charger/car charger/whatever and as much current as is allowed. A lower voltage would cause the phone to not see that it's hooked into a charger.
PC USB ports are usually limited to 500mA per port, while the wall charger may allow up to 1000mA. This would explain why PC charging might take longer than with a wall charger.

Either way, once the battery is charged to 100%, however you choose to do it, the longevity of the battery depends on the current drain and the battery's capacity. As people have mentioned, the phones may have different calibration points, making it difficult to compare things like percentages of charge between devices. The only scientific way to test would be to have two phones running the same apps, booted at the same time and used the exact same way, only charged with different chargers.

I guess what i'm saying is that it shouldn't make a difference. :)

G1 Discussion / Re: O-Town 3g

I have to say that I've had many times where the data connection will just stop working. You can see the up arrow blinking like it's sending data,  but never receives any back. I toggle the 2G only option in the settings menu to make it reset the data connection, and it usually starts working again. I've noticed the phone itself drop the data connection (Edge/3G icon goes away and comes back a few seconds later) if it stops working for long enough. I'd just go ahead and reboot the phone, see what happens.

G1 Discussion / Re: Google Contacts Grrrrrrr
« on: October 28, 2008, 02:12:39 pm »
Unfortunately Gmail Contacts has an issue with setting photo icons for contacts. Unless the user has an email address listed, you can't set a photo for their entry. If you set one on the phone it syncs, but does not show until you add an email address (any address) for that contact.

Edit: If you switch to Older Version and go editing, there are options there to add photos for contacts that do not have email addresses.

Edit2: Aparrantly while it lets you upload one and all that jazz, you can't save the contact.  You just get the error message "You must specify an email address for a contact with a picture." Stupid gmail contacts.

When you assign a picture to the wallpaper it's automatically resized when you set your crop dimensions in the wallpaper settings. Wallpapers should be 640x480 I believe.

G1 Discussion / Re: RC29 Update!?
« on: October 28, 2008, 01:26:31 pm »
I didn't see this mentioned, but if you have AnyCut, you can create a shortcut to Device Info, and it will give you some more details on uptime and such, but near the bottom it shows the last time it successfully checked in, and there is also a button at the very bottom that says "Check for Update" and if you click it, the phone will do a checkin.

This won't get you the update if TMO hasn't set your phone to receive it yet, but it's just some info to see that your phone is checking, and that they just haven't pushed the update out to you yet.

Usually the GPRS thing is just temporary, happens when your signal is really bad for awhile, but as soon as you move a little you should get EDGE back. Well, that is, unless you're out in the middle of nowhere with very old cell tower equipment, then you might be stuck with GPRS.

Well, that's the beauty of Android, it doesn't have to. Handango is already selling an Android version of IM+, however it's $24.99 and has no trial version. After my experience with IM programs on Windows Mobile, I want to make sure I can try out that thing before I invest my money into it.

Here's hoping BeeJive releases an android version...

in the IM app that comes with the phone, GTalk is over the data connection. There is no text messaging charges for GTalk usage. However, AIM, Yahoo!, and MSN instant messaging DOES use the text messages in your plan to send and receive messages. I've been using GTalk for about 2 days now and have checked my text messages used on the My Tmobile page, and they have not changed.

I'm waiting for someone to come out with an IM app that uses the data connection before I start getting on AIM and such on the phone.

I think the main thing they were trying to convey is that all the questions that the people in the ad were asking are things that they'd type into Google to find out. They're basically trying to show that with the G1 you have Google searches wherever you are.

G1 Discussion / Re: G1 video encoding: How To
« on: October 23, 2008, 09:00:28 am »
I've been transcoding some TV shows that i have, I just let it auto-select the aspect ratio, it seems to choose 3:2, which works good on the device, doesn't appear to stretch or anything. I haven't tried any widescreen clips yet, I'm at work right now and I don't have any with me to try. I'll give them a shot when I'm back home.

On the H.264 thing, there was mention that the device has hardware-accelerated H.264 decoding, so perhaps running cooler is a side-effect of it being able to take care of a lot of the decoding work in hardware rather than software codecs.

« on: October 23, 2008, 08:35:11 am »
After playing around a bit, I used basically the exact same settings as the main post, 15fps and all the same audio settings, however, i switched the output to H.264/AVC. This produced a perfectly playable file with very little noticable blocking, and the same file size as with the MPEG-4 option selected. It looks much, much better with H.264 than with the MPEG-4, and the video player didn't seem to have any trouble playing it back.

Edit: After testing, the chin stays cooler when playing back H.264 encoded files than when it's playing back MPEG-4. Most likely less power used too!

Yea, its most likely the camera. Some app might be stuck trying to use it. Reboot the phone and see if it does it right at startup.
