G2 / Re: G2 screen protector

I had the InvisibleShield on my G1 and it worked great.  I understand that the "Best Skins Ever" brand is just as good as InvisibleShield but offered for much cheaper, so I think I'm gonna be ordering this:

Screen-only is 6.99, the whole body kit is 8.99

G1 Discussion / Re: msnbc videos working on g1 !

I seem to remember Hardball was the only show whose videos wouldn't work on my G1.  Last I checked was a few months ago.  I was disappointed, as it's the only one I care to watch on MSNBC every day.

G1 Discussion / Re: Who has received Android 1.5 OTA?
« on: May 28, 2009, 02:14:54 am »
ya im waiting too. paitence is a virtue. well ill be paitent till friday then ill manually do it ha ha
the builds are exactly the same.  same serial numbers and everything. for anyone out there wondering if the OTA version would be different/better, you as might as well go ahead and download from that link, beyond that it's just the principle of getting the official OTA (which I completely understand for some twisted reason -- I'm one of those guys. :))

Sweet, I just reached over for my phone to set my alarm for the morning, and I have the update prompt waiting for me.  Gonna install now.

EDIT:  I guess I should mention I'm in Union City, CA. And I noticed it just now at 3:45am, don't know how long it had been waiting.

EDIT 2:  Nice!  I now have the officially OTA-pushed, completely legit and unrooted version of Cupcake.  The first thing I noticed after it installs and reboots is that the booting screen showed "Android" written in a silver font that gleamed as it loaded.  And the Phone-Locked screen now shows your wallpaper instead of a plain black background.

I'll check into more of this when I wake up.   ;)

G1 Tech support / Re: Contacts not syncing.
« on: May 19, 2009, 09:43:31 am »
I have the same problem.  I was wondering why I would occasionally lose a contact that I could've sworn I had saved, and then I realized that every time I synced, it would give me that error message you mentioned, and the contacts would revert back to my last successful sync, which I think was January.

G1 Discussion / Re: Has Anyone Goten CUPCAKE 1.5 on their phone yet

Well, according to the tmobile forums, cupcake got pushed back another week, and they expect all G1 customers to have the update by early June.

Yeah, there won't be anything stopping developers to make a custom virtual keyboard.  A SureType T9 version would be great.  Even in portrait mode we'd be flyin'. 8)

Screw your MAME emulator!

ScummVM is THE greatest thing for the G1.  Monkey Island, anyone?

I'm just saying, won't you have to delete a lot of crap to clear that 40 megs?  I'm not complaining about the size of Cupcake, I'm complaining about no freaking card installs.

I'm more concerned by the 44MB download size.

Android market discussion! / Re: Quake lives !!!!!

So the controls are really complicated again? Are they usable?
I wouldn't say they're usable.  I only used it for like 3 minutes but it was pretty awful, so I stopped.

The movement d-pad is in the lower left corner of the screen.  There's up, down, left and right.  It's pretty small, so whenever I kept wanting to move forward, I'd press the up button but it would register as me pressing the "turn left" button.  I kept having to readjust my fingers for that.  Pressing anywhere else on the screen doesn't work as a direction cursor, it will only shoot your weapon, wherever it's aiming.  Also, to turn as you're running is very lame.  You press forward on the screen, and roll the trackball either left or right so you can steer as you're running.  Unfortunately, the sensitivity is really low so I kept having to scroll that damn track ball furiously and it couldn't steer me fast enough.  So I would have to move forward, stop, turn right, move forward, stop, turn right some more, etc etc.  Press on the trackball to jump.

And the whole thing is inching along at like 5 frames a second.

Haha, it's Quake!  How surreal to see that intro level all these years later, on a cell phone.

It's extremely choppy and the navigation is awkward (on screen d-pad is too small, and turning with trackball strokes is inefficient).  I don't think I would load it again.

G1 Discussion / Re: 3rd party NON MARKET apps.
« on: March 24, 2009, 11:04:52 pm »
There's the PDAnet tethering app, which will allow you to connect your G1 to a computer through the USB cable and use its internet connection either on EDGE, 3G and WiFi.  It works, it does NOT need your G1 to be rooted or otherwise hacked, and it's free.  It's a great app.  Check it out, and follow the instructions from here:

G1 Discussion / Re: turn G1 into router without root!!

Worked for me, awesome +1

Says I got 560kbps up, 312kbps down on EDGE

Good so it works on edge great i can't wait to try it.
Sorry, I meant on 3G.  But it does indeed work on EDGE, I just used it for about 10 min or so on EDGE after enabling only 2G networks, and it's slow but definitely functional.  :)

whatever.

i actually mean that, by the way, in the positive sense.  different extra features and bug fixes that have been long in the making.  in the end it's a pretty cool cellphone that ain't gonna change your lifestyle with cupcake or not.  so cupcake in april finally?  ok that's fine.

T-mobile 3G / Re: tired of waiting
« on: February 26, 2009, 03:55:32 am »
Yeah, it's true.  The G1 can't access the 3G bandwidth that ATT uses.  If you take it to them, you will still only be on EDGE.
