Well i'd actually grab a TP2 and slap Android on it as fast as I could without loosing most of the hardware benefits that is.

I agree with you all.  My biggest complaint right now has to be the "Openness" or lack there of with Android right now.  Specifically talking about the blocked access to the market running an unofficial Rom. I bought the unit and under the Apache Licenses should be able to do with it as i please.  Magenta is seriously about to loose a subscriber if they continue limiting the G1 like they are all to make a buck on the What ever they want to call it 'HTC Sapphire' next month.  Just my two cents and speculation anyways.

G1 Discussion / So its April Where is Cupcake??

Just thought I'd start a new thread about information regarding the next Android update for this month.  Any solid info available yet?

Yes and it is very very annoying.  I have to agree with your speculation regarding the cell towers however I much like a lot of others have noticed this decline in efficiency since the latest RC33 update.  Lattitude is pointless at this time, and my battery only lasts about 4.5 hours without use already, (bluetooth on and connected) but come on, GPS would kill me.  Just praying we see better performance with the next set of updates whether its cupecake or not.

looks like the rate plan argument is nipped in the butt with the announcement of the unlimited plan T-Mobile is about to offer thats great stuff, good to see them getting back to their roots (give away the minutes, charge for the data).  Its cool.  I guess they had to do something with big V acquiring Alltel and adding their version of MyFaves to their plans. you can beat 50 bucks for unlimited access.

I couldn't agree with you more, honestly.  Just need a bit better coverage and I am pleased.  Its seems as though T-Mobile is stepping up their handset selection and coverage is the last piece to the puzzle.  Wouldn't it be funny if sprint and the pre failed miserably and T-Mobile bought them out for spectrum purposes? I mean we are currently at 3.5g and 4g, Wimax or whatever whoever is going to call it is the next big horizon.  I wouldn't see that it'd be all that difficult to dissect and convert to support mobile data goodness.  (**wow wild tangent I know**) back on topic.

Telnav is a great feature that is best not proprietary to any specific service provider.  I really could have used that voice guided turn by turn this past weekend lol.

You are 100% right in that I should not generalize as my experience is completely different from another regarding coverage,  however in the 2 states that I live or have family, my personal experience and coverage maps show that T-Mobile isn't the best ATL GA, and Central NY (Syracuse area).  Again ATL is one of the supposed best areas in coverage however where I am 95% of my time it just isn't the case Honestly, it is what it is unfortunately.

I rely heavily on my cell as it is my primary/only source of communication and when My fiance is at work in her office where there are 2 T-Mobile towers located on her campus and she gets absolutely no coverage where even Metro PCS, and AT&T have coverage theres a problem here (shes using a G1 as well).

I cant speak for the world and I have been a loyal customer to T-Mobile for over 5 years now, but honestly the coverage has gotten worse IMO/Experience.   On to rate plans, if your looking at T-Mobiles standard non-MyFave options yes they have stayed the same, but when you go to add text messaging, and data, insurance, etc things start to add up.  For instance lets look at the my faves for families 1000 plan 89.99, add a line 9.99, unlimited text for family 19.99, (2) G1 data plans 49.98, (3) Equip pro 18 = 187.95 Verizon compatible plan Nationwide Premium Family SharePlan 3 lines of service 189.99 provides every feature Verizon has to offer go check it out.  I'd pay 15 bucks more for my insurance but that 15 is worth it if my cell works where and when i need it. its the same.

I guess my point is it really depends on your needs and mine are heavy.  I stack my plan to make it work but for what i am paying I can go to any company out there and select a comparable rate plan and be shelling out about the same amount of doe.  If I can receive better coverage then its worth it to me.

So in the end, the fact is that I do love T-Mobile that's why I'm still with them, I love the G1, and android even more, I can live without My Faves personally but its nice to have.  Once other carriers start receiving their android handsets its going to be almost a no brain er for me to leave unless my personal issue (coverage) with T-Mobile are corrected is all I'm saying.

I honestly have to agree that T-Mobile has been slowly but surely increasing their price plans but the benefit is not really here anymore (coverage is subpar at best and handset selection still sucks, less the G1, maybe Memoir).  I worked for T-Mobile for 3.5 years and I can remember when we changed to start offering 2 year contracts.  I said to myself right then and there its all down hill from here and it has been.

Honestly do the research on rate plan cost across all of the major players right now there really is not that big of a difference with the exception of those iphone plans which are crazy but aside from that what we pay after all of the extra features is what someone on Verizon or sprint or even at&t will pay on one of those bundled packages they offer.

Now for telenav i mean the service has been out for years and has always been 9.99 so that was no big surprise and honestly not bad if/when needed, but i have to say once Android phones start launching on all the other carriers its curtains for Magenta in their customer base.

Honestly if it wasn't for the G1 i would have jumped ship after I left the company reason, simply their coverage has IMO gotten worse and I live in ATL GA we've had 3g since day one.  The latest RC33 update has improved slightly but in the places I am the most the only thing 3G is good for is to drain my battery, and I probably drop 5 to 10 calls a day on my commute to and from work and during my lunch break.  that's why I agree with rberney in the fact that since I am already footing the bill I should at least be able to use the service where I am the majority of the time.  Increasing price points will only make it easier for customer to switch to a carrier like Verizon.  Sorry so long winded.

Honestly people this phone/OS has only been available for 2 and a half months........ I think that's pretty impressive and that android is pretty bad ass in this regard. The things we are complaining about are small things which will be fixed. The G1 isn't going to be the end all for the android OS anyways and most people paid what 180 for the phone with upgrade??? I remember when the latest and greatest smartphone was easily sold for 499.99 (HP IPAQ - windows mobile what like 3 years ago) lol any blackberry that gets released with a tag of 299.99 maybe 250 with rebate, hell even a sidekick ls which doesn't even do half of what the G1 can at 299.99... comon people we have an excelent product for what its worth and it WILL get better.  Bte Carolina is getting it handed to them right now.... didn't see that comming.....

G1 Discussion / Re: Is it just me?? White G1 feels lighter and smaller?
« on: December 06, 2008, 01:40:20 am »
on a serious note, i went to T-Mobile today and seriously the white g1 is definitely smaller than the black (which i own) in length and thickness lol.  HTC  covered all basis with this one lol.

As long as your within a 90 window period new batteries, chargers or the missing 3.5mm jack for many of us should be replaced.  with that being said, I did get my exchange battery sent out a couple of days ago but I have to say I didn't have the troubles posted here.  I pretty much called up let the rep know that I pretty much did most of the trouble shooting steps they normally put you through myself over a period of time and he pretty much said well thats all you can do and if its still  not getting better battery here you go.

I like the fact that they are not making you send the old one back even though my original stays on 64% no matter what I guess I can say I have a backup or travel battery now until it dies completely lol.

I guess the bigger picture with my post is when you call up let the rep know that you actually know what your talking about here and that you've tried some things to make the situation better and it still didn't work.  9 times out of 10 they will just give you what you want as long as it is within reason.

yeah that kind of sucks though I already paid like $10 bucks for mine I guess If a freebie is available I can save the $5 plus shipping that I see em for now on my wifes G1.  Penalties of being a loyal supporter and purchasing the day something comes out.... x-(

« on: November 19, 2008, 04:53:27 pm »
One thing I noticed about my G1 after about a week of usage was that the space bar key which I and everyone here use with any text entry feels a little loose on the right side of the button.  If i glaze my finger over it i can feel it shift from side to side, its visible too.  It doesn't seem to interfere with any of my input and besides a little battery weakness I have no real other problems with my device so I didn't really want to exchange it but I guess I am a little nervous because if that key goes down there goes, sh#& all input basically, until virtual keyboard is launched that is LOL. Like I said its not that bad a little wobbly but still very usable.

PhoneFusion to Bring Visual VoiceMail to G1, Android

http://androidguys.com/?p=2765

This is the first of many maybe but it looks pretty good from what I have read so far.  Youmail isn't all bad, it could be a whole lot better, in my opinion.

OK, so I got an email from a friend today which contained a link to download a file from zSHARE.  Obviously it was a .zip file, but when I tried to download it i get an error message "The device cannot support the file type" I tried again and I just get "download unsuccessful".  I guess my question here is is there a way to download .zip files etc from the web? would I have to use wifi or should i be able to download on 3G? Is there a way to unpack those files once downloaded? is there a way to change the default storage location to look to the sdcard instead of system storage? i know the AppsInstaller app on the market is used to download apps from other places on the web to the sdcard and install from that location, but would that work for any other type of content ie. .zip files, wallpapers etc? I will play a little more and update my findings but if anyone else has been successful please advise.

I was using youmail up until yesterday when i cancelled  my account.  It was an ok service, but from what i understand a more native like app is on its way to the market.  I think ill enjoy that a little better.  I mean using the transcriber, either people that call me cant speak very well or the thing sucks A@@.  Also they are now releasing a set of upgrade options of which you have to pay for the transcriber service now.  There will still  be a free option but it already sucks so i dont think i'd want to pay just to get a more accurate message. I also couldnt lset the youmail number as my vmail as it caused strange issues on my dash prior to using my G1, (it would actually cause my device to lock up and reset ????).  I do miss the message alerts when you miss a call though as I normally always check my emails and sms so that was useful, other than that looking for something better.

Whats crazy is the same exact thing happened to me yesterday.  I was at work and I just so happened to look down at my phone and an incoming call was displayed but no ring tone to alert me. About a second later the screen went dead, i was like WTF??? Shortly after it rebooted and came right back up.  Fortunately, no problems since but I still thought it was weired.  I have been looking for any one else that had a similar experience since. Sorry to hear yours didn't come back to life though.

Phone face-off / Re: Which of these best suited for college student
« on: November 19, 2008, 11:20:19 am »
I would have to agree with Kickstar.  Either of the blackberry series of phones with WIFI would probably benefit you the most in what you are trying to achieve.  You could also get away with not using the data plan from t-Mobile although they have an email only package for 9.99 since web browsing is not important.  Your decision now would be between having a full qwerty or a sure type keyboard.  With the IPhone obviously you need the data package unless you jailbreak it but even in doing so I think you need access to the mobile network for many of the features and functions to work which means getting on that outrageous rate plan.  unlocking it could be useful using it on the T-Mobile Network but then again without the full data plan you pretty much have an IPod touch in your pocket.  The behold......... Its a nice phone with tons of multimedia features, not what your looking for.  Definitely go test drive the differences between each device and see what best suits your needs. Personally the blackberry series seems like the closest match for you in my opinion.
