G1 Discussion / My Respect for T Mobile Just Leveled Up
« on: November 12, 2008, 06:26:48 pm »
Yesterday while stuck in rush how I called up the closest T Mobile store, thank you Google Maps, and asked if they sold any spare batteries for the G1. Since I'm going on a trip and won't have access to any way of charging it on the train I would like some spare power.
They tell me they don't have any in stock right now but hang on a second. The lady came back and said that she did have a spare and that I could have it. OK how much? Free. *blinks* Free? From a carrier? What is this frae word you speak of?
So I just finished charging the main battery, and threw it in my wallet and stuck the spare in to charge. T Mobile Rocks.

G1 Tech support / Re: Is anyone else not getting e-mail updates in Gmail?
« on: November 03, 2008, 02:52:05 pm »
Still getting this.  I rebooted the system once and the missing e-mails showed up.  However since then I've gotten two more and nothing is show up in my inbox.  This is BAD and pissing me off since I will not be near a computer from 6AM-10PM tomorrow.  >:(

« on: November 03, 2008, 01:40:07 pm »
I have 4 new emails in my inbox on my web client.  Nothing is showing up in my inbox on my G1.  I even hit the refresh button.  I'd reboot but I've been doing A LOT of that over the last week.    :( I actually am leaving the thing in Edge only mode because 3G is totally unreliable even in areas where I get good signal.

The iPhone gets street view, and driving directions, and Google Earth.

Grow up.

Did you have anything constructive to provide?

No more constructive then the thread complaining that a service that is available on Google for all is on another handset.  My original post and statement still stands.

The Circus (lounge) / Text Message Notification of Election Results?
« on: October 30, 2008, 11:37:02 pm »
Hi all.  I'm an election judge in Minnesota.  IMHO I believe the election will be decided by a handful of states in the East early in the evening before I can get home to find out what is going on, and I'm pretty sure our chair won't let me bring a TV in to watch the results....  ;)  :P  So for the past week I've been trying to find something that will text message blow by blow results.  Yes there are websites like m.cnn.com or m.npr.org but that requires continuous checking.  Something I'm certain I won't have time for.  I'm trying to find something that will specifically notify me.

Anyone have anything like that out there?

G1 User Reviews/Feedback/ / Re: Deal Killer...I think I'm done.
« on: October 26, 2008, 05:57:02 pm »
Have you tried to change the browser "GMail View" on the email on your gMail to Desktop instead of Mobile?

At the very bottom of an email when you compose there is a link under the "View Gmail In: Mobile | Desktop".

As I said in my post.  Yes.

G1 User Reviews/Feedback/ / Deal Killer...I think I'm done.
« on: October 26, 2008, 05:21:15 pm »
I just found out, because this is the first time I tried it.  That Google does SOMETHING to their web based client.  So if you go into www.gmail.com then go to the normal client, instead of the mobile one.  On a desktop I can select which e-mail account I can send e-mails as just above the TO: dialog box.  On the G1 Browser that option is not there.  Dear Google.  GO TO HELL!

I'm serious.  this one FUBAR has destroyed the ability to use this thing for communication purposes.  I can no longer e-mail people short of using the damn messed up mail client.  What the hell is that company thinking.  I have 9 days to figure out if I want to stick with this device.  Right now I'm HEAVILY leaning into the no category.

Part 2.  See http://forums.tmonews.com/index.php?topic=4533.0 for part one since I went over the limit on a post. :P

Included Applications
OK lets get this out of the way.  Google’s core goal for Android was to create a foundation for developers.  Not to create a complete solution out of the box.  As such Google is expecting developers to fill in the holes over time.  The problem is that this is no excuse for half[bleeped]ed apps.  And I will be frank here.  Several of the included apps are just that.  They lack major features that are found on their web based Google counterparts.  Lets start off with the Gmail.

I would love to say that the app was adequate.  I would love to say its even OK.  The reality is that the dang thing is useless for anyone other then to most basic of users.  I have 5 e-mail addresses forwarded to my Gmail account.  Reading e-mails is slick and easy.  The problem is composing and responding to e-mail.  For some retarded reason even though my web account allows me to send e-mails as those other accounts and compose new e-mails as those accounts, the Android app doesn’t allow any of these things.  Strike 1.  No way to switch gmail accounts.  I have multiple ones.  One for Anime Detour’s hotel department that I DO NOT want to have forwarded to my account due to spam.  Strike 2.   To get to the drafts area I go through the labels area.  HUH?  This makes NO sense.  Which brings me to the GUI for this app.  It sucks.  Its not intuitive.  Frankly it screams that it was designed at the last minute.  Strike 3.  You are crap.

Contacts.  Gah.  Just as bad as GMail.  First you can’t  organize by last name.  FAIL.  No icon view or no way to view the icon in the list view.  DOUBLE FAIL.  Anytime I send an e-mail the damn thing gets new contacts that I don’t want.  So in the last 3 days I’ve had about 12 contacts I don’t need.  Crap like 12 lj_notify@livejournal.com’s because there is one for each person who has responded to my LJ.  This FEATURE is going to clog up my contact list making it a MASSIVE pain in the butt to wade through my contacts when I want to call someone.  TRIPPLE FAIL.  To display a specific group MENU -> DISPLAY GROUP -> SCROLL TO GROUP then find the user in question.  OK not a fail.  At least the option is there.  But it’s convoluted.  I guess I got spoiled on my Pocket PC with Pocket Informant.  That app is how to do contacts right.
Then you have the chat application.  Lets see.  First off it took me a day to figure out that they store the chat transcripts in the Gmail app under labels.  Why?  No idea.  Now I have to ask.  How hard would it have been to have the IM client have direct access to these logs when you either long press the client or long press the individual buddy in the list.  Then you have the inability to set away messages beyond the default of available, away, or appear offline.  WTF?  Yah because I would never want to tell someone this is my phone and go ahead and leave a message and I’ll get back to you.  Or better yet how about being innovative, and use the cell tower triangulation (Because all phones have this ability, and determine that you are moving at a moderate rate of speed and set the status to driving please call.  Naaa that would make too much sense.  No, this like the gmail client, feels like an app that was created as an afterthought.  A 11th hour OMG!  We forgot to add that app!  You, you, and you!  Get something whipped up NOW! Type of feeling to their design.  Not good Google.  Yes I understand that you want to allow others to develop these apps or outright replace them.  However something that seems to have escaped Google:  That is all well and fine for the 2nd, 3rd, and 4th Android phone out the door when you have options.  With the G1 for the time being we are stuck with this crap.  Which heavily damages the usability of the system.  These apps didn’t need to be the crowing achievement in e-mail and IM clients, but they should at very least pass the acid test of capabilities.  Something that neither does.

Thankfully the next couple apps redeems the list of apps on the G1 from being a total disaster.

Maps.
Put simply it’s the killer app of the phone.  I haven’t played with maps on the iPhone so I can’t do a comparison, but on the G1 its like being God.  Opening up the menu you get Search, directions, clear map of everything, my location, map mode, history, and zoom.  Search is slick.  It allows you to find items in your general area.  Friday I was at 100 & 494 and I knew there was an Olive Garden up the road that I wanted to make a reservation with.  Search -> Olive Garden and BAM.  There it is.  I could even dial the number from inside the app right there.  I found this in all of 2 minutes as I walked into the building to do some work.  Stupidly easy is what I would call it.  I haven’t used directions yet.  My location with just cell town triangulation is OK.  It can be hit or miss.  But it generally gets your location within 1 mile.  Turning on GPS or just using it outright and its spot on.  Map mode is my absolute favorite though.  You get ALL the features of Google Maps.  Map view, Sat View, Traffic (OMG I love you!), and Street View.  Street View works.  However the ability to use the compass so you can pan the phone around to change the view is still twitchy sometimes it works, generally I have a heck of a time getting it to move 180*, and sadly trying to move it via the touch screen doesn’t do jack since the phone looks to have given control over to the built in compass and there is no way to turn this off, so every chance I’ve had to demo this feature has ended in FAIL.  I did realize though after trial and error, that you can’t be in landscape with the screen open.  It looks as if the compass is orientated to only portrait view.  Beyond that a solid app.

Youtube App does what the name suggests.  It plays Youtube videos.  Pretty standard fair here.  It supports favs, and plays videos.  Too bad they didn’t add the ability to leave comments or rate the video though.

Browsing. OK so I know why they didn’t do it. Part system resource hog. Part this is the manufacturers responsibility. However lets get the one glaring defect out of the way. Flash. Its not there. OK. Talk to Adobe. There isn’t much Google can do other then look at them with the evil eye and be pissed. That aside the app is solid. This is based on the same framework as Pocket Safari for the iPhone. Overall the feature set is solid. I do wish that zooming in and out was a bit smoother. While I’m on the topic of zooming; on most the apps it seems to be spotty. Sometimes I do it. Sometimes I select something under the screen. Not sure if this is a touch screen problem, OS, or app but its annoying. Panning and zooming is solid and scrolling around the screen is a breeze with the trackball. The ball is almost TOO sensitive. But it’s solid nonetheless. I’ve been able to access 90% of the websites I visit while on my desktop. The exceptions being anything Flash based. There are also some occasional rendering issues with images. I’m finding that you get pixilated images on some sites. One site that I’m having problems with is http://www.fivethirtyeight.com But beyond that. Solid. I would request for in the future to add plug in capabilities. I miss adblocker on Firefox. :-(  Lastly there are bookmarks.  This needs to be fixed.  You can’t even organize them.  Just one big mess of a list.

A quick blurb on third party apps. I’m not going to review them since it would be a massive undertaking. However I want to bring up the use of TSR apps (terminate Stay Resident) in Android and GPS. There is a balance that needs to be found for apps that use GPS. Prior to now access to GPS was difficult on many smartphones, yes this includes the iHype until recently. Applications like http://www.androidlocale.com/ Are stupidly innovative. However they simply cannot function as they are meant to on the G1. The app almost requires GPS to be on all the time. This cannot happen because of battery life. Also the app seems to only work when you have it up. Having the thing in the background or removed from the list of 6 apps that run at the same time leaves GPS deactivated. This means to activate locale I need to open up the app or bring it to the forefront which triggers the GPS. Which makes it pretty pointless if I need to remember to do this every time I walk into a place. The only other alternatives would be to have a helper app running in the background to occasionally check your location to see if you are triggering any of the events. But even that only solves part of the problem. To do the above you either need to turn on GPS and leave it on (Because the cell town triangulation isn’t accurate enough to pinpoint your exact spot.) or the helper app needs the ability to be able to turn on GPS by itself, check your location, and then turn off. But even that would be heavy on the battery. I guess it would be possible to have the app use cell town triangulation to see if you are within x miles of a trigger point and if so turn it on and leave it on until you leave the area. All I know is Locale is a fascinating app. But it really can’t be used as its intended unless its always running and it can check GPS occasionally.

OK there are about 3 MIA apps that I AM going to harp on Google for.  Again since the G1 is launching Android they are representing yo!  As such they should have had a complete platform with all the basics.

#1 is Google Docs.  *bangs head into keyboard*  Oh Google.  Were you really stretched that thin that you couldn’t provide something as fundamental as this?  The fact that this thing has a full QWERTY keyboard should have been a sign from God that this thing should have had Docs support out of the box.  *slaps Google upside the head for this*

#2 video support.  An even bigger failure.  Yes there is now a very basic video player on the Google store.  This does not change the fact that this is suppose to be a multimedia device.  WTF Google?  Or did someone realize that the battery life on this thing is already precarious enough without dragging video into the mix that they figured best to leave it off?  *dawns his tin foil hat*  I smell a conspiracy theory brewing!

#3 To Do App or integrate it into calendar. A little known fact about the Bible. There is a missing page. You know the part about let there be light? Yah next came let there be PIMs. Which includes Mail, Calendar, Contacts, To Do’s. Since the dawn of time PDA’s, and things that look like PDA’s, which includes smart phones have had To Do lists. I can attest to this because I have a Palm Pilot 5000 sitting on my shelf.  I own about 2 dozen PDA’s including a MessagePad 2100.  Apparently Google and Android are too good to have this feature out of the box. EPIC AND COLOSSAL FAIL ON A LEVEL THAT CAN NOT ME MEASURED! No really. This actually impacts the functionality of the damn device for me.  Currently I’m using a damn draft in Gmail to track my To Do’s. I want to smack someone at Google with my G1 right about now.
Rating (1-10): 4[/i] (I considered a negative number for a time because some of this crap is REALLY pissing me off.  But a few of the apps above saved the score.  Even 4 might be a bit on the generous side.  I can not stress how disappointed I am in GMail and Contacts.

Google Store
Good foundation. Needs more core apps like task manager, process monitor, GPS stats, etc. Yes I know it will grow with time. I would be less impatient if what shipped in the box wasn’t so lacking. But the store itself is good. Clean design and whatnot. It also has auto updates on apps which is also a nice plus. None of this needing to check back crap. I would like to see weekly e-mail notifications on new apps though. Or have the store app check daily to see if there are any new apps and notify you in the notification area. Its called settings guys. Learn it. Love it. Oh and please, please, please put up an official website that has all the apps. If I’m sitting at my desktop I shouldn’t need to fire up my phone to see if there is anything new out there. Rating(1-10): 9

CONCLUSION: going into this venture I knew that the G1 was going to have problems. I had not illusions on this front. First off it was originally built as the Android prototype that the early OS would run off of. I figured it would be polished, and look better then early glimpses we’ve seen of the hardware and I was right. It’s cleaned up. Its solid, but its still a prototype underneath that black plastic. Does this make it a bad phone? Heck no. Even though much of the above is bitching, at the end of the day I am enjoying this phone. I have tempered my enthusiasm going into this venture, because frankly after dealing with Apple I got burned on being enthusiastic for a device and an OS. This time around I’m not going to be intentionally negative, but more realistic. I expected problems out of the gate, and sadly I was correct. The good news is that most of those problems CAN be fixed via software and firmware updates. Both of which I expect in mass quantities from T Mobile and Google in the coming months. Already there is an over the air update planed for this past week and this week. Minor update, but they are starting to update which is a good sign for the future. Beyond the OS the software needs to get rolling fast. The capabilities of Android and the G1 are there, but very much locked away until we get some apps rolling out.

OVERALL SCORE(1-10): 6 I want to stress that again this is a moving review.  6 is a base hypeless score.  this will probably go up to a 7 or 8 with time and updates.

NOTE THAT THIS WAS ORIGINALLY FOR MY LJ.  There are some basics concepts being used that most people on this board already know about that friends on my LJ don't.

OK first off what do I mean when I say walking review?  I mean that it will evolve over time.  Because lets be honest.  The OS is brand new.   The app market is brand new.  The 3G network is brand new.  The newness will play a roll currently, and in the coming months.  So take this review with a grain of salt.  Today what I’m going to focus is three fold:  The out of box experience with the OS and the apps, and one thing that can’t, generally speaking, change: the hardware.  So lets get started.

I picked my G1 up Wednesday.  Second in line.   I also picked up an 8GB MicroSD card from Amazon for a respectable $23, and a car charger at the store for a less respectable $25.  The phone itself is easy to setup.  You simply get a prompt to log into your G-Mail account.  Once done the syncing begins and your e-mail, calendar, and contacts are all brought down to your phone.  No future updates are needed to backup this info in the future since the contents of these apps are synced real time with your accounts online.  From here on out I will refer to Google’s servers and accounts using the buzz word The cloud, or Cloud Computing.  Once I was done setting up I headed out to work.

Battery Life
This is a major concern that I had going into this purchase.  I’ve seen issues being referenced online.  Everything to having the battery die before lunch to having the battery drop 10% over a 3 hour period without even touching the phone.  I believe that those people either have defective units or there is something that is installed on the system that is chowing down on the battery.  Overall battery life that first day was not all that great, but nothing like has been reported online.  I didn’t keep track of the numbers, but there were a few times during the day where I could see battery life drop 10% in a matter of a half hour or less while I was browsing.  Granted this was HEAVY browsing with multiple windows open, with chat going on.  However this was difficult to actually tell since every time I get into my car I was plugging it into the car charger.
I did a few things to tweak the system and increase battery life.
First you have screen brightness.   To put it bluntly 100% brightness is overkill.  Minimal setting at 0% is still perfectly acceptable.  I set mine around 30% or so.  Next up was WIFI.  Off unless I need it.  Next up is GPS.  This is an odd one, because I’m not certain how much power it uses.  The reason for the confusion is that it appears that, currently, when an app is not at the forefront of the screen being used it doesn’t access GPS.  I can tell because the GPS sat icon is not being displayed.  I’ve yet to determine if the unit is turned off or simply put in a hot standby mode.  Also I can’t really tell how this impacts battery life.  So for the time being if the phone’s battery gets below 40% I have been turning off the actual GPS radio outright, and relaying on radio tower triangulation, which I will go into depth in a bit.  Next up is 3G vs. 2G for battery life.  Again put simply 3G eats the battery life like a starving man.  Thankfully Android allows forcing the use of 2G/Edge.  Which I consider surprisingly snappy for basic browsing, chatting, e-mail, etc.  On mapping and such?  Forgetaboutit.  Slow is an understatement.
So where does this leave battery life?  Friday I went throughout the day without charging at all with moderate browsing, chatting, etc.   Also there has been some circumstantial evidence that is suggesting that like laptop batteries you need to calibrate this one out of the box.  I find that idea questionable, but who knows.  I’ll let everyone know next week how that goes.  So how do I feel about the battery on this thing?  With 3G and heavy use you WILL be charging at least once during the day if not twice.  For 3G and moderate use, and the right settings.  You can probably eek by with a 9-5PM charge.  For 2G/Edge and moderate browsing.  No problems at all.  So it really depends on your use and settings.  Also I believe that the OS and the radio firmware will see tweaking over the next few months to address this as well.  Will there be a killer fix?  No.  the simple fact is that this system is power hungry.  But its not as bad as people make it out to be as long as you are mindful of your usage.  Rating(1-10):  6?

Hardware Quality
First off obviously I’m making assumptions on this hardware.  Assumptions that what is a problem on my phone is common on all G1’s.  This may or may not be the case, so again take it with a grain of salt.  Again this is my first smartphone.  Up til now I’ve had cheap o flip phones.  Nothing overly fancy.  So what do I think of the G1’s hardware?  I’ve played with a Wing before.  I’ve played with an iPhone as well.  I’d place the G1 in the middle of the pack.  It’s nothing fancy, but it’s not overly cheap.  The screen quality is solid.  No dead, or stuck pixels as far as I can tell.  Contrast is solid.  Brightness is outstanding.  I am finding some issues with the touchscreen.  Now I don’t know if this is with the OS or with the screen itself.  Basically I’m getting touches that are not being recognized.    The screen hides a QWERTY keyboard under it.  The mechanism used is SOLID.  There is a loud click as the screen curves out and up which makes the unit feel like a quality mechanism.  It’s a good design.  The keyboard itself is also good.  Less so on the brown G1 model since from what I hear the letters are more difficult to see on the brown model.  But on the black model that I have its keys and characters are easily seen.  Plus the system DOES have a backlight on all the buttons.

The only gripe I have with the keyboard is that the keys are a bit too flush to accommodate the screen.  Making typing a bit difficult.  The spacing helps with this, but not enough.  Even a quarter of a MM would help drastically.   But that is a catch 22.  Doing so would require changes on how the screen sits.  Which already is an issue IMHO, that I will address shortly. The system has a trackball built in between the home and the back buttons on the base of the phone while in normal portrait mode.  The feeling of the ball when scrolling is solid.  There is a bit of a catch to the ball as you move it around as if there is a very slight ridge running around the ball keeping it from over accelerating.  Feels very solid and high quality.

The rest of the body is made of plastic.  This, IMHO, is a catch 22.  On one hand reception is solid, unlike the iPhone that is metal except the bottom 3rd where the radio is you don’t need to worry that you are covering up the radio.  However on the other hand the plastic used for the bottom cover makes the device feel cheap.  I don’t know if others are having this problem but I’m finding that using the phone one handed with my right hand when I use my thumb there is extensive flex on the bottom cover.

You will see the camera button there on the bottom right of the picture.  That is the area where there is flex and where you get an audible creaking.  From the looks of it part of the reason is simply the lack of clips to hold the cover in place.  IMHO this device’s back cover should have slide off instead of popping it off the clips.  Poor design IMHO.  Also the screen is already showing a bit of looseness when it’s out in keyboard mode.  This is due to how it was designed.  The screen doesn’t slide UP but curves OUT and up in an arc.  This really is just a symptom of the design, and while not a deal killer it is somewhat annoying.  Beyond that is the overall size of the device.  Reviews like Engadget portray the device as a brick because of the keyboard.  Horsecrap.  I’ve seen king sized candy bars that are larger then this phone.  The only people who are going to have problems carrying this are those who are skintight pants.  And frankly such people are more concerned about looks and will probably go for the iHype anyways.  Rating (1-10):  6

Camera
Again this is my first smartphone and the first phone I’ve had with a camera.  So I don’t know what is par for the course.  Overall the camera is OK.  There is a focusing mechanism that kicks in when you slightly touch the capture key.  It then will take the picture if you press down harder.  There is no optical zoom on the thing.  Not a big deal for me.  However it would have been VERY nice if they had somehow included image stabilization in the thing.  Because in anything other then bright situations the image can come out fuzzy due to the low light.  Even moderate Florissant light results in iffy image quality for a 3MP camera.  However when you do get a good picture the results are solid.  Rating (1-10): 6

Android
OK.  On to the meat of this post.  What is the OS and the included apps like.  I’m actually going to break this down to android the OS itself and then the included apps and then apps that can be downloaded.  The OS itself is a solid piece of code.  I’ve had ZERO glitches with the system.  No crashes.  No freeze ups.  Nothing.  When an app stops responding. (Usually because of the network.) Android comes back with a prompt to close or continue relatively fast.  The desktop, screens, and the GUI are well designed.  The Figuring out how to do something is pretty straightforward.  With only a few quirks.  Nothing overly difficult.  Just keep in mind that right clicking, known as long holding on Android, will give you most of the options you are seeking.  The way Andoid displays notification is probably the best in breed AFAIC.  Windows Mobile, iPhone, Symbian has nothing on the notification window that slides down from the top of the screen.  Its probably one of the best UI designs I’ve seen that takes up next to no space, and yet is accessible from just about any window from any app.  Well done Google.  Its too bad we don’t see such innovative ideas from other companies that CLAIM to be the king of the GUI.
The settings for the phone (Both for the hardware and OS) are generous and allow you to really tweak the system.  From ringtones (WAV, any music file, etc.), to alert tones, to WIFI settings, to security settings, to radios used, to data syncing, to GPS settings, to app management, to call forwarding, etc.  Google has given a lot.  However me being the needy geek I want more.  I was disappointed to see that there is no, obvious way to tell the status of your GPS signal.  Read:  How many sats are locked, signal strength, etc.  This is annoying, because when I’m close to a window in a building I can’t tell if I have a lock or not.  If not I’d give up trying instead of wasting battery life.  Second up is the unlock screen.  Innovative design.  Basically you have 3 rows of dots.  You create an unlock pattern on the dots.  See here for an example.
<object width="425" height="344"><param name="movie" value="http://www.youtube.com/v/JGCIlAwrpvI&hl=en&fs=1"></param><param name="allowFullScreen" value="true"></param><embed src="http://www.youtube.com/v/JGCIlAwrpvI&hl=en&fs=1" type="application/x-shockwave-flash" allowfullscreen="true" width="425" height="344"></embed></object>
Its slick and locks out for 30 seconds after 5 attempts.  After which you get another attempt every 30 seconds.  However I would LOVE to have an option where you can set the thing to scrub everything on the device after say 15 attempts.  It may do this, but I haven’t sat around long enough to try it out.  That said I wish there were more granular options for security in the settings.  Finally there is the backlight on the keyboard.   There are no settings for this at all, and the timeout is ridiculously short.  I’ve found myself fumbling for the buttons after the backlight turns off.  Yes I know this is a drain on the battery.  Nonetheless it sucks that I can’t set it to 30 seconds.    SPEAKING of time outs.  And this is a MAJOR issue IMHO.  The screen times out after only a few seconds.  Something like 3-5 seconds.  I’ve had a hard time setting my voicemail because I need to hit a button to bring back the screen (I can’t just touch the touchscreen.) and then hit #.  And before that I had to disable security because the dang system’s timeout brings it back to the login screen.  This is a poor design.  There needs to be a setting for this.  Either a timeout option for calls or a timeout option that determines if security is enabled during a call.

I’m also seeing a speed issue with multitasking.  Say I’m rendering a page in the browser, and I hit the home button.  It can take 3-5 seconds for the screen to show up and then display the icons.  The system does have some issue with multitasking.  However this isn’t a laptop.  So this may or may not be the norm, and frankly trade-offs had to be made with speed.  So this may be the norm in smartphones.  Its hardly a deal killer either.  Its just somewhat annoying.
Also there is no way to close apps.  This is less of a concern then say on windows Mobile that will leave apps open until your memory is hosed.  This can be problematic since apps that are system heavy can still bog down the system.  Android seeks to find a happy medium between both systems by only keeping 6 apps open at a time.  While this is a better setup I still would like to be able to close apps when I’m done with them, or determine how many apps the system keeps open at one time.  So say I have maps open.  That is going to be a resource draw.  Kill it once I’m done.   As it stands I can’t do that.   None of the above are deal killers and frankly I hope to see them resolved in the future.    Rating(1-10): 8

On to part 2 http://forums.tmonews.com/index.php?topic=4534.0  because the forums didn't allow me to double post in a single thread and the text was too long :P

T-mobile 3G / Re: my 3g wont work
« on: October 23, 2008, 08:20:32 pm »
patience...first to go T-Mobile's website to check service area. I know even though they said 3G is up and running, it is still not at 100%. T-Mobile has always been cool about crediting accounts for lack of service.

Yah well...I think T Mobile is pulling a fast one with their maps.  I've driven around my neighborhood about 1 mile north and all I get is Edge.  supposedly the edge of 3G is about 3-4 miles south of me, so I'm "theoretically" WELL within the range.  However there is NO 3G here.  None at all.  Now when I drive further into Minneapolis.  Yah.  Good clean signal.  But even then I'm also noticing that the G1 drops into Edge A LOT.  3G, edge, 3G, edge, 3G, edge, and so on.

G1 User Reviews/Feedback/ / Build Quality
« on: October 23, 2008, 07:54:48 pm »
Maybe its just mine, but I'm not overly impressed by the build quality.  the one real complaint I have is holding the phone one handed with my right hand and selecting with my thumb.  the rear cover creaks badly.  I took off the cover, thinking that it was just a problem with how it was seated, but no.  Looks like there is no catch in that area of the back so there is plenty of flex available.  gah. :(

General Android Questions / Gmail client: Surprisingly Useless.
« on: October 23, 2008, 06:48:34 pm »
Yah know.  I didn't expect much out of the G1.  But the fact that Google didn't even bother to put all the features that they have in Gmail into its Gmail client. (And no I'm not talking the generic email client.)

Currently I have 5 e-mail clients forwarded to my gmail account and setup so I can send e-mails AS those accounts.  But OBVIOUSLY I can do that on my G1.  Oh wait.  No I can't.  I have to go to the web based client to do it.

Thanks A lot Google.  >:(  And no I'm not going to assume that this will get fixed down the road.

Got my ticket. #2 - black

How many people are in line with you?

There were about 6-7 people.  However I'm in Eagan off of Yankee Doodle so its definitely suburb area where I would expect lines to be shorter.  The store should be opening in about 5 minutes!

Its started raining here in MN.  Currently 40* and dropping.  I'm still planning on showing up around 5AM though.  Unless there is more then 5 in a line I'm keeping my *** in my car.
