HD2 / Touch problems with my new HD2
« on: June 25, 2010, 10:03:34 am »

So I just got my HD2 on wednesday and so far I love it. My cousin though probably doesn't. It seems to autodial her all the time. Her name starts with an A and is, from the top of the contacts list, located on the screen just above the normal menu bar. She has since been renamed by lastname and her original name was replaced with 611, so at least I just call T-mo.

I don't know why or all the different causes, but just about anytime the screen gets touched accidentally it just starts calling her. it's almost like it recognizes a slight touch as a slide over to contacts then if there is a second touch it just goes to start calling. The rest of my top 5ish contacts (alphabetically) have been dialed, but none more than this one. One thing that does it for sure though is moving the headphone plug around while the phone is on. That causes all hell to break loose. Basically it starts scrolling through the menu options, sometimes settling on internet, other times on audio (strange to be listening to slacker and then have one of the songs in memory start to play).

Is this common? Is it a signal interpretation (software fixable) or a bad mainboard/screen (hardware replacement)? Do I just go to my local T-Mo and ask for a swap out?

At the very least is there a way to reduce the hyper-responsiveness of the screen? How about a way to add one more layer of protection to pocket dialing, I'm thinking that instead of just calling the moment you touch a contacts name it actually ask you if you want to call them and require a slide (like answering a call). maybe a way to dump the sense, where all the sensative screen issues start) and just use the windows menu (flying window button option).

Phone face-off / Help me pick new phones
« on: June 09, 2010, 08:43:22 am »
I've been with T-Mobile for 5+ years. Over those years the best phone I've owned was a Razr. Took the most abuse and worked the best. It like all things eventually died. The nice folks at the local store convinced me to get Katalysts for me and the wife, since we had very poor service at home and could use the wifi to boost it. It was a decent phone but mine only lasted about a year before it started to fritz out and the screen died.

So for the last 5 months I have been on a handmedown BB8320. I like it. It's nice to have a keyboard to text. I don't have Data.

So anything resembling a contract is up for my account. we both need new phones and we are also looking to add my special needs sister-in-law to the account. I get a 15% discount with T-Mobile for being a low paid state employee. All signs point towards staying with Tmo. Now I need help picking a phone.

I text a fair bit, and I want real email on the phone. I don't however need facebook/twitter/you tube. I do however want Pandora, Google maps. My wife doesn't really need any of that, just texting, but I figure with the BOGO we might find her something that doesn't require a data plan, but is not too much of a dumb phone.

So what should I look at? I don't want mega thick and I don't want something that will be outdated in another 6 months, so the G1 is off the list. The Cliq feels like it's cheap to me. The nexus seems nice, but is it headed for oblivion? The HD2 is awesome, but is the lower winmobile holding it back too much? The garminfone is hot.

Ideally I would like to get something in the next 3 weeks but the Samsung announcement has my interest piqued for mid July.

So thoughts?
