This explains quite a lot and I will be posting more info as I receive it if this thread does well. I will be updating it later with more info but this is just the beginning so enjoy.

3G has a bit less power than 2G. They are two vastly different technologies. GSM works like a city bus. Each bus has a certain number and within that bus a seats for each user. The bus is ike the frequency and the seats are timeslots on that frequency. The advantage of this technology is you can turn up the power on it and as long as the frequencies are different, there will be no confusion. The disadvantage is you waste a lot of bandwidth at times when users are not actively talking. bandwidth at times when users are not actively talking.
Reception does affect the speed though I am not really sure to what extent. I do not believe it has as much of an effect as compared to a lot of user sharing the same cell, but I know the distance from the tower can definitely make a big difference. Since your area has just been distance from the tower can definitely make a big difference. Since your area has just been launched, it could speed up in the future. Generally after you launch an area the engineers will watch for areas where speeds are down due to the number of customers using it. They can add more circuits that will significantly speed it up. watch for areas where speeds are down due to the number of customers using it. They can add more circuits that will significantly speed it up.
WCDMA technology (3G) works more like those teleporters on Star Trek. It takes all the users and scrambles them up sending them in one big load. They are identified by unique numbers so the other end knows how to unscramble them. The advantages of this is there is no wasted the other end knows how to unscramble them. The advantages of this is there is no wasted bandwidth. You are utilizing as much bandwidth as you can at any one time. The disadvantage of 3G is that the coverage area tends to shrink and expand based on how many users are on a cell. If there are not many users on it, the coverage area expands. As more users get on a cell, the more it shrinks. cell. If there are not many users on it, the coverage area expands. As more users get on a cell the more it shrinks.
We are going to eventually need more 3G sites than we have 2G sites to compensate for this breathing effect unless they come out with a 3G booster we can adapt to our system. There are 2G boosters we use, so i have to believe that someone will develop 3G boosters as well.

you will probably have 21 pretty quickly. You will be capping out the 7.2 device
Him: [11:53am, Jan 8]
You need like 3 T1s to really notice 7.2. you probably have like 2 right now
Me: [11:54am, Jan 8]
I doubt that but if you want to take a look because I've been having data issues
Me: [11:55am, Jan 8]
Data times out and my connection drops then starts from G, E, then back to 3G
Him: [11:55am, Jan 8]
ugh. You are getting congestion then. There are several areas in my area that is happening too.
Him: [11:56am, Jan 8]
our corporate is being a bit of a pain in letting us get more circuits because of HSPA+ coming
Him: [11:56am, Jan 8]
My director has had to really push to get some extra ones added to some of our sites
Me: [11:57am, Jan 8]
Wow
: [11:57am, Jan 8]
That's not even the major problem to me since my speeds have taken a sharp decline
Me: [11:57am, Jan 8]
Back to basic UTMS
Me: [11:58am, Jan 8]
Not even 400kbps
Me: [11:58am, Jan 8]
Sometimes but its not my average more like a burst
Me: [11:58am, Jan 8]
I noticed AT&T announced it shortly after tmobile did 7.2
Him: [11:58am, Jan 8]
yeah, sounds like its congesting.
Me: [11:58am, Jan 8]
We all thought it might have been something with the backhaul
Him: [11:59am, Jan 8]
I think your market is way ahead on HSPA+ though. Thats probably why they haven't added more
Me: [11:59am, Jan 8]
You know of anything going on in Rockford I'LL?
Me: [11:59am, Jan 8]
IL
Him: [11:59am, Jan 8]
You'll have basicly the equivalent of 13 T1s soon
Him: [11:59am, Jan 8]
no idea
Him: [12:00pm, Jan 8]
except for HSPA+ which is goin on everywhere of course
Me: [12:01pm, Jan 8]
I hope we get an increase by Feb of some sort
Me: [12:01pm, Jan 8]
Indianapolis, IN 46226
Him: [12:02pm, Jan 8]
So here is what happens when this congestion kicks in...
Him: [12:02pm, Jan 8]
It begins showing up on a list...
Him: [12:02pm, Jan 8]
they wait like 30 days then order the circuit
Him: [12:03pm, Jan 8]
which is crappy
Him: [12:03pm, Jan 8]
and it takes usually 10-15 days to get a circuit
Me: [12:03pm, Jan 8]
A friend of mine on the forums filed a trouble ticket and so did this one
Me: [12:03pm, Jan 8]
EDGE seems dead when it switches over from GPRS they are floppin on each other, doesnt hold a connection f n the other 2 locations. However since the problem its been degraded where it has less signal like the rest. Its now disconnecting the most so I can say as of today its gotten worse into the evening.Rockford, IL 61104.
Me: [12:04pm, Jan 8]
About 1 month and 2 or 3 weeks for a circuit
Him: [12:04pm, Jan 8]
probably more congestion. Lots of people get phone upgrades for Christmas, so all of a sudden you have more data users
Him: [12:04pm, Jan 8]
pretty much, yes
Him: [12:04pm, Jan 8]
Unless you get your director to yell at the transport people....then we cut it down to less than a month
Me: [12:04pm, Jan 8]
Even though the focus is on HSPA will edge speeds remain the same?
Him: [12:05pm, Jan 8]
yeah, for the most part. Only speed increases will be from people migrating off the Edge network
Me: [12:06pm, Jan 8]
His reception has been horrible dropping all the way down to GPRS so congestion could cause that?
Him: [12:06pm, Jan 8]
however, we are upgrading some Edge sites in my area because the freaking government is refusing to get off 3G frequencies
Him: [12:06pm, Jan 8]
yeah, congestion can cause that too
Me: [12:06pm, Jan 8]
Don't you have 7.2?
Him: [12:07pm, Jan 8]
we have it turned on, but not the circuits. We basicly have like 4 major cities my area covers. One may not get 3G until 2014.
Me: [12:07pm, Jan 8]
Wow! That's stupid
Me: [12:07pm, Jan 8]
5G by then lol
Him: [12:07pm, Jan 8]
yeah, we are going to have to find more spectrum somewhere.
Him: [12:08pm, Jan 8]
It covers an area where there are government bomb testings.
Him: [12:08pm, Jan 8]
and they dont' want to give up the spectrum yet
Him: [12:08pm, Jan 8]
never mind the 4.2 billion we paid for it.
Me: [12:10pm, Jan 8]
Damn that's a lot of money
Me: [12:10pm, Jan 8]
Damn government
Him: [12:10pm, Jan 8]
yeah, thats of course for all the spectrum we bought...but a hell of a lot of money
Him: [12:11pm, Jan 8]
you are actually lucky, because Port Arthur is close to that zone too
Me: [12:11pm, Jan 8]
I have noticed my signal strength at home has improved, instead of 2 bars its either 3 or 4
Me: [12:12pm, Jan 8]
I actually hate my city since we seem to get everything last
Him: [12:12pm, Jan 8]
it is like a square zone around the gulf of mexico
Me: [12:12pm, Jan 8]
I'm still in shock we got 3G as soon as we did
Him: [12:14pm, Jan 8]
I've actually been a little impressed with the latest round of phones coming.
Me: [12:14pm, Jan 8]
Me to
Him: [12:15pm, Jan 8]
should be a netbook coming soon too
Me: [12:15pm, Jan 8]
I was just about to say that tmobile is stepping up finally
Me: [12:15pm, Jan 8]
HD2 for example
Him: [12:15pm, Jan 8]
I think Dell is is going to be doing our Netbook
Him: [12:15pm, Jan 8]
I'm kinda guessing
Him: [12:21pm, Jan 8]
its just odd to me this sudden push to get HSPA+ out by June which is the same time the exclustivity of the Iphone ends.

Me: [3:34pm, Jan 15]
My friend with the network issue commented and stated that he did more than one trouble ticket and the reply he has gotten back is that its not in the budget for them to fix
Him: [3:35pm, Jan 15]
they must believe it is a coverage issue then
Him: [3:42pm, Jan 15]
if they think it needs a new cell site, they will put that in.
Him: [3:43pm, Jan 15]
They are finally going to focus on existing customers over new customers
Me: [4:06pm, Jan 15]
Here is a better question, what's with AT&T 850mhz band vs Tmobile 1700mhz?
Him: [4:07pm, Jan 15]
850 is pretty prime bandwidth
Him: [4:07pm, Jan 15]
unfortunately, AT&T had it first. There isn't anymore to get
Me: [4:07pm, Jan 15]
Dammit
Him: [4:07pm, Jan 15]
we have to build more towers than AT&T to make up for it
Me: [4:07pm, Jan 15]
That's awful
Him: [4:07pm, Jan 15]
don't worry though. From what I hear we have a new inhome solution coming
Him: [4:08pm, Jan 15]
better than UMA
Him: [4:08pm, Jan 15]
It will not require any special phone or anything
