G1 Discussion / What's so great about Android software SO FAR?
« on: December 05, 2008, 01:06:39 pm »
The key phrase in that question being "so far".
What I'm curious to know is, why is Android itself so impressive to reviewers? Many reviews decided to split their rating system based on the device itself and the OS. The device got moderate to decent reviews while the Android OS got pretty significantly high scores. The general consensus was that Android is awesome or has great potential to be awesome. To me, they're both about the same, or maybe even the device is better than the OS. If it had a 3.5mm jack it would be CLEARLY the better component.
I've had my G1 since release day and am very pleased with it. 3G internet, nice browser, Google Maps, better camera than my last phone, good stuff. And I'm a basic user, so after the web browsing experience, I'm pretty much set, and that's fine. I haven't used an iPhone, and I'm coming from a RAZR to the Shadow (briefly), to the G1, and I'm just not sure how Android distinguishes itself by being this great OS experience.
I was expecting the market in its present state to be better, but because of the ridiculous limitation on app space, the Android Market to me is a complete afterthought. I have a random collection of basic apps and my phone ranges from practically full to prompting me to clear space. After a few days, it was not even worth the management of app space until I see what paid apps will be out next month so I kinda stopped checking the market for new stuff. And again, for ME, that's fine. I can be patient like that, and wait for other OTA tweaks to Android to improve features or add new options. Same with this root access nonsense*, if it ever gets fixed, but to me that's just so counter-intuitive to the way they sold this device.
But I'd like to know what kicks ass about Android to YOU guys.
*EDIT: I think it's hilarious (in a good way) to see rushmore's discussions about root acess and the Java layer everyday. No one has campaigned more fiercely or consistently about the same issue since Lou Dobbs and immigration.
