My 3G is definitely not a speed demon, but it is much, much better than having iOS4.0.

I have jailbroken and unlocked iPhone 3G with iOS 4.0 and the lag is killing me. I've been thinking about upgrading to iOS 4.2.1 and then do a jailbreak and unlock. I am curious if anyone has had any success? What toolset to use GreenPois0n or RedSn0w? What should I watch out for to ensure that do not brick my iPhone?

Any advise would be appreciated.

UPDATE:
I used these instructions to successfully jailbreak and unlock my 3G iPhone!

http://www.iphonedownloadblog.com/2010/11/29/unlock-iphone-4-2-1-ultrasn0w/

One final question:

When I connect my newly unlocked iPhone to iTunes, it asks if I want to "Restore from Backup" what will this action do? Will it move apps back to the iPhone or will try to reinstall iOS 4.2.1 which will lock and unjailbreak my phone? What is the best way to get my apps re-installed onto the iPhone?

Thanks much.

@johnee can I use the above to downgrade my 3G from 4.0 to 3.1.2? Also, what about the issue of baseband 5.12 on 3.1.3, I had read that once an iPhone has that it is unlockable? Is this true? Should I downgrade my friend's iPhone 3.1.3?

Thanks much.

Ditto here... @kickstar13 I appreciate all that you do for the forum here!

It's a friends iPhone. I have already upgraded my iPhone 3G to 4.0 and it is jailbroken and unlocked. One reason that I am reluctant to do the upgrade is that my iphone 3G can get very, very slow...

Any idea when a jailbreak/unlock for the latest iOS on iPhone 3G?

Stay with 3.1.3...I have a JB and Unlocked 3G on iOS 4 and it can become very, very slow as I use more apps. Can't wait for the JB and Unlock for iOS4.2 which solves the slowness issue on a 3G.

Apple / Can't Connect to YouTube
« on: November 13, 2010, 09:59:07 am »
All,

I have a jailbroken and unlocked 3G iPhone on iOS 4.0. I have never been able to connect to YouTube via the native app, but this never bugged me as I have use m.youtube.com.  I recently downloaded TagReader, to view movie trailers, and it wants to connect to YouTube via the native app. Whenever TagReader tries to display a movie trailer, I get the dreaded cannot connect to YouTuber message. Any suggestions would be appreciated!

TIA,
Tmoguy

UPDATE:

I fixed it using this solution:

go to cydia/manage/source
add source http://cydia.pushfix.info
then install youtube fix #1

There are fix #2 and #3 but did not install these yet.

Apple / Web2Go on my 3G...
« on: August 07, 2010, 03:00:16 pm »
Folks:

I am in need of help again! I am trying to get Web2Go to work with by iPhone 3G. I have set APN to epc.tmobile.com, Enable 3G off, Cellular Data On, Data Roaming on, and turned wifi off. When I try to reach a web site I get 'your current plan is not compatible with this device...' I know that Web2Go works as I inserted my sim card into my sons Gravity and was able to reach a number of Web sites.

Any help would be appreciated!

***** I was reading another discussion and got it to work by changing APN to internet2.voicestream.com *******
 :) :) :)

Not sure what is going on, but for whatever reason I cannot acquire a wifi signal at home. I know the wifi is ok as I have 2 iPod Touch and 2 MacBooks (am writing this post on one) using wifi w/o any problems.

When I select SETTINGS WI-FI I see my wi-fi network. I then select my wifi network I see my IP address. BUT, the little wi-fi icon at the top of the screen is not displayed. I see bars and the word T-Mobile and an upper case E.

The only thing that has changed is that I purchased a new rubberized case (tried acquiring wi-fi - did not work) and was at our local apple store to get my screen replaced. The iPhone 3G is running iOS4.

Any ideas and/or suggestions are greatly appreciated!

OK, this is weird...I now see the wi-fi icon on my iPhone screen. And, just checked my wi-fi network and it now displays Router and DNS info, which it did not earlier!

TIA,
Tmoguy

Apple / Tmo CS wants $30 data plan for iPhone...
« on: July 11, 2010, 05:21:29 pm »
Dear All:

Just wanted your thoughts here...Just did a jailbreak and unlocked my iPhone 3G and tried to get tzone or WebToGo but Tmo customer server rep. said that because I have an iPhone (how did they know???) I had to get the $30 Web/data plan. I argued, but she was adamant that I get the $30 plan. The Tmp rep did however gave me a 30 free trail, nice but not what I want.

Folks, what are my options? I like having Web everywhere but $30/month for edge speed is waaaaaay to much especially when I can get wifi at work, at home, at starbucks,....

Thanks much.

Thanks much to all...am in the process of moving 5 gig worth of music to the iPhone!

:)

@kickstar13

Thanks for the jailbreak/unlock instruction! I was able to recently jailbreak and unlock a 3G iPhone and insert my tmo sim card without any problems.

Now that it is unlocked, can I connect the iPhone to iTunes to move music, photos,... to the phone? If I select "Set up new phone" will this brick my iPhone?

Thanks much!
