Great point freak4dell. The other carriers would HAVE to still sell Google phones, but keep competitive with pricing. And you are absolutely correct in that HTC or anyone else can make a better Android that Google. If other carriers dont like it, perhaps they start to push other OS like windows and then technology goes crazy with Apple, Google, and Microsoft going head to heads in the mobile market---and that wouldnt surprise me one bit.

Viper, its really great to know you have ALL THE INFORMATION ::)
Im not the only one who thinks it makes sense for Google to buy T-Mobile. Its a genius strategy. Esp now that they own a manufacturer, they can become even more profitable and have more control on the product. They will have to make it exclusive because of antitrust reasons and other carriers will gripe because Google will give themselves the best phones so Android would have to be exclusive. It would be the only company in the world of its type and Google already thinks they can do "it" (whatever it is) better than anyone else (because they can).
It would be an enormous operation but it would recoup its investment (from cell provider profits in 5 years, ad revenue increases due to more traffic, and better ways of delivering advertising to consumers) in about 6-8 years. Google is all tech based and wants to be relevant in every arena in which they invest.
As for Apple, see above. The same principle applies.
So Viper, it seems like you want the merger to go through more than anything. Not gonna happen. And you cant just "sell off" 45% of Verizon. C'mon man.  :-X

Care to revisit this subject with Googles purchase of Motorola Mobile today?

AT&T has way more money than Google. Google would sorta have to crunch to make up for a purchase like this. But in a way i'd rather have Google integrate with T-Mobile and become Google Mobile. Some T-Mobile needs to be kept.
I dont know where you get your info, but just because ATTs market cap is 20B higher than Googles, does not mean they would have to scrape to buy Tmobile. I think Google is in a far better position to make the purchase than ATT. Google has been around for a fraction of the amount of time that ATT has....

Regardless of owning it or not, or knowing how to run a cell phone company, I think just by having themselves out there as owning one, they would bring on customers. Making it exclusive or not doesnt matter to me. It was just an idea. However, its not like people wouldnt hear about something like this as I think Google can get the word out. So if they had their own exclusive line of all Google apps on a device, that would automatically drive up revenue for maps, voice, and whatever other app they want to integrate into the product. In order to get customers, they would offer a low rate and great prices on phones and crush the competition. Many people are frustrated with their current carriers because of selection, coverage, price...Google can combat that and watch them pick up 80M customers over 8 years, while doing the country a favor by lowering cell prices of all other carriers. Google may not have experience running a cell company, but they know where to find the talent to do so. Mobile advertising is the next (and final) frontier. Why would they pass this chance up?? I think its silly to say it wont happen.

Obviously this merger isnt going to go through. Heres what will happen: The merger gets shot down by the FCC, ATT coughs up 6B to DT as the settlement. Google swoops in to purchase Tmobile for less than ATT would have and buys it outright. The deal get approved through the FCC and now Google has a sturdy place to display its android power.
They honor their existing deals with other carriers and then Android goes exclusively to the new "G-Mobile". Now Google has exclusivity to the most popular mobile operating system in the world and they are not bound or limited by anyone as to what they can do with it. They can move the wireless industry forward by themselves. Not to mention what this would do to ATT, Apple, Microsoft, and Motorola. This instantly gives "G-Mobile" a full nationwide network not tied to a landline like the other companies. Also, they can use all of their existing services (location based advertising, navigation, and Google Voice) on their network and increase revenues on several parts of their company that would actually pay for the purchase in a very short amount of time. Tmobile is a progressive thinking company and Google is as well. Google already has their hands everywhere else. Imagine what they could do with a wireless company.
I would be in favor of something like this. Would you?
