Hey guys:
I'm a long time lurker, and first time poster. After reading all the storm over what the G1 may or may not be (It's the FCC leaked phone/the one we've seen forever vs. the Oh no it isn't camps), I figured I'd weigh in on things a wee bit, as well as throw some more fuel on the fire.
Firstly, you guys can go ahead and mark your calendars for Sept. 23 for the launch event. As per a few internal documents that come across my desk, there is a PR event scheduled for that day. From that day forward, there are handset launch events in various cities up until the 22nd of October (G1 Day we'll call it).
I've never seen a multi-city tour for phone launches before, so this must be SOMETHING huge. What could be this huge? Thats right, the G1.
Handset Launch Event Cities and Dates:
9/23-New York
9/24-New Jersey (City not specified)
9/25-Philadelphia
10/6-Dallas
10/7-San Francisco
10/8-Los Angeles
10/9-San Diego
10/10-Seattle
10/13-UMTS Phase II Rollout
10/14-Miami
10/15-Atlanta
10/16-Chicago
10/17-Phoenix
10/21-Houston
10/22-Minneapolis
G1 Nationwide Availability: 10/22
Now that I've gotten SOME of your attention, my thoughts on if we've seen the "Real" G1, or not:
I think that the device we've seen demo'ed in numerous photos, videos, etc is in fact, the real G1. (My thoughts, not confirmed in any way).
Having said that, Tmo and Google could pull an Apple very easily with the PR Event on the 23rd of this month. If you remember the original iPhone launch, Apple demo'ed the unit, and THEN sent it to the FCC for approval, to minimize leaks. HTC could easily sneak approval paperwork into the FCC under our noses, with a confidentiality date such that we'd never even KNOW about the device until we saw it for the first time on the 23rd.
Why bother? Andy Ruben said it best, "We don't want to waste anyone's time". One of the HUGE draws to the iPhone wasn't just it's OS, but also it's looks. Like or Hate Apple, you have to admit, it is a slick piece of tech, especially with the 1st gen one was launched in comparison to the market.
What does this mean for us? I'd honestly be ready for the G1 to be a technology demo piece. That is, a phone that blows the hardcore early adopters out of the water with it's features, and build quality (notice I didn't mention looks...). Sometime soon thereafter (probably once the early adopters have come in, kinks have been worked out, and the marketplace is well populated), you can expect to see a sleek, svelte, "iPhone Killer" make it's way out of the woodwork, and into the hands of the masses.
So dude, there you have it. And yes, everything AFTER the release dates is pure speculation on my part. Everything else is legit.
What do YOU think?
